im looking to buy a couple reels to replace my ebay reels i have been using im looking in the shimano,penn,abu,pflueger brands i need one reel to suit a 2-4kg rod mostly for squidding or catching the odd kingy and i need another reel to suit 7kg+ the most important thing i want is a smooth drag can someone with experience help me out?
im on a budget so looking to spend a couple hundred on both
You can get a couple of Stradics delivered to your door for well under $400 if you buy from OS. You can also get the Saros for a bit less that would also do the job. A 3000 would suit the 2-4kg outfit and a 5000 would suit 7kg. You could easily go a size smaller as they have beefy drags but line capacity drops

I agree with Horse, the stradic, saros and symetre are all well capable of the 2-4kg setup and I would opt for the saros or stradic for the 7kg setup just for the extra drag pressure they supply. All three reels are great pieces of kit and all have 10yr warranties. Personally on the 2-4's i have the 2500 and 3000 symetres are more than adequate and faultless in service plus they are under $150 off the shelf in most tackle shops if you ask for a discount for buying two. I test my symetres out on 60-85cm snapps on a fairly regular basis and they handle them well.
The only other brand I would consider is the quantum cabo pt range for their extreme corrosion protection system, once again awesome reels for the dollar and mega strong but a tad heavier than the matching reels from shimano. Bigger drag pressures though.

i can see the symeter 3000 has 7kg drag and the symeter 4000 also has 7kg drag for roughly $2 difference in price but the 4000 is alot heavier at 400 grams if i can get away with squiding and also catching 80cm king fish with the same reel i may do that also i looked at the stradic there are two models im not sure what model your talking about there is stradic FI and stradic C14
The Stradic FI version is alloy frame C14 is magnesium frame lighter but not brilliant for saltwater...... I use FI models.

i have 2 symeter 4000 reels i use for squiding and offshore plastics find them very good..would recommend them

ok i have been looking around and found a cheaper reel and it has the penn drag it is the penn slammer 260 it will take 190 yards of 20lb braid 11lb of drag and only weighs 12.2oz this sounds like the perfect reel and its $50 cheaper than the shimano reel is there any bad feedback about the penn reel?
I would recommend handling both side by7 side before you make your decision they are pretty chalk and cheese in feel IMHO.
The shimanos also are basically 6:1 retrieve ratio making them well suited to spinning macks and tuna up.
Your dollar, your call, but go feel them before you buy, all are commonly stocked.

The Slammers are good reels in the mid to larger sizes. I would not compare the Shimanos to them in the smaller sizes. The Affinity and Applause fit that sort of category better. If you want some other options look at pflueger, Quantum, Tica, Daiwa and Okuma. They all have suitable offerings

what would u recommend in those brands? there are just so many reels im clueless as to what to buy and hardly any of them mention anything about the drag im not to fussed as to what reel feels best i will get use to any reel as im currently using ebay reels so u get my driftall i want in a reel is a really smooth drag and to be light enough to flick a small 1.8 size squid jig around all day and catch 70cm king fish on the downrigger

I cant comment on the Abu but both Pfluegers are good value reels. I have a Torsion 60 which I picked up from the big snake place for under $90 and it seems OK after the first few trips.
I have found most mid priced reels have pretty good drags. Its more a question of gear quality and corrosion resistance
