New 110amp Deep Cycle Batt for 55lb Minn Kota

Any brands recommended? I need a new 110amp deep cycle for 55lb Minn Kota this summer (400 hornet trophy)

110amp is my limit due to weight - I cant lift the bigger ones and starting to weigh the front of the hornet down too much. My current one is Supercharge allrounder - got 2 years out of it.

    Thanks

    Hi Cindy

Without a doubt ..... the best wet cell deepcycle is the Trojans (they cost a bit more - but will last) $300-$350
2 years is not real good but the all rounder is not a true deep cycle (combo cranking / deep cycle) ..... always make sure you charge your battery after use.

Even better ..... but you pay for them is an AGM type ( I run 2 x 100amp Absorbed power ....... They last , I'm just about to click over 4 years on them and I reckon they are working at about 90% of when they were new)
AGMs will set you back somewhere between $350-400.

Anyhow - thats how I would go

I'm interested in this issue also, what brand are your AGM batteries NAGG?

Trojan by a long shot, mine is going onto 6+ years and will probably replace in the the next twelve months.

Thanks everyone. Yes the allrounder suited me at the time, but now I need to spend the dollars for a dedicated leccy battery & get it right the first time.

I charge the battery back up after each session with my c-tek - so the battery is looked after correctly.

The end of last summer was shitting me off having a half arsed 110amp and a half arsed 80amp that I would have to carry both for a days fishing.......lots of extra weight in the boat and a general pain in the bum...lol

Spent a fair bit of money on the CTEK charger, so are the AGM's OK to recharge on it the same without stuffing them/shortening life?

For those of you getting 5yrs+ out of your battery - I use mine from Sept-May and I will have a 6hr session in the arvos for 2 or 3 weekdays and then all weekend. So I get some pretty solid hours up on it.

    Thanks all

C tek are just about the best ...... I just bought a 25amp C Tek
Anyhow - sounds like you are doing things right.
The all rounder wouldn't allow you to draw it right down without causing issues eventually ....... specially as often as you use it. - they just are not designed to have the life constantly sucked out of them

So yeh ..... sounds like time for the right battery for the job at hand.

AGM is the best option if your conscerned with sulfric acid floating around in your boat, otherwise the trojan is a great battery with a good cycle life,
The other advantage of the wet cell trojan is you can check the specific gravity levels and vpc for optimal battery life, i read alot about how good the c teck charger is and iam not nocking it but if the vpc and specific gravity are not ballanced you are shortining the battery life so its not just the charger responsible for battery life. There are many factors governing battrey life but as general rule look for battery with the heavest weight when purchasing as weight equalls more lead which equalls longer life. also ask for there warranty terms and look carefully at stated cycle life as most warrant in cycle life not years,

    Thanks everyone.
Decided to go with the Absorbed Power AGM 100amp.

2yrs warranty (dealer just double checking) & I can get one for $235.

Would have liked the Trojan AGM but too pricey. Not sure how going back to the 100amp will go, but they are 30kg and the next size up 38kg too heavy! If need be I will buy another to get me though the weekends when I need one on the charge and one on the boat.

By the way, has anyone heard how the set up with x2 6v batteries goes on the Minnkota's? I cant fit the 12v where I want them up front under the deck & was toying of the 6v ones that would fit, and keep the boat balanced.

Unless you are using your battery everyday, or have odd mounting arrangements, just go for a standard deep cycle lead acid. I have standard lead acid deep cycle that I bought from some place at brendale which had been going stong for 3 years. I have friends that have yachts with standard lead acid batteries exceeding 10 years. The tip is to maintain them, keep the water up, keep them charged when not in use.

I bought a trojan last weekend under protest, because it was the only 130ah deep cycle I could get locally that weekend. I will be interested to see if it oulasts my other batteries. They guy at the shop reckons 5 years, i reckon I better get 10+ at $300.

I am regretting it now though, I bought it for the yacht and they dont have screw in caps. Wondering now if I should have bought an AGM to handle the constant heel of the yacht. Was not really thinking at the time.

I may be tempted to sell it yet.
