Internal antenna on the Northstar or external. Has it happened previously or just this once. Few probs could arise depending on these.

Re: vhf radio aerial interfeares with gps

Gday Rosco,I have had my 6500 Trackfish not pick up for a few hours,so made a call to others in the area and found there to be no problem, was just my unit.My antenna is mounted on the dash next to the radio, approx 400mm,my compass is mounted just in front of the Trackfish.I put my experience down to signal reception problem,as after a while it locked on and never had the same occur since.Have you had a bit of a play trying to make it happen while at home?Is your antenna mounted near your radio antenna?Jim

    1. A VHF aerial being not much more than a bit of plastic and wire will not interfere with a GPS unless the radio is transmitting and in (very) close proximity to a GPS antenna.

    2. There is more information to this scenario that has not been outlined. More info required.

    3. What sort of VHF antenna is this? What are the mechanics behind this "full erect position" and "3/4 the way up". More info required?

I would be suspecting the cabling beneath the two aerials running parallel or something more so than the position of the aerial.

What was the GPS doing actually?

Re: vhf radio aerial interfeares with gps

seriously doubt your VHF antenna is interfering with the GPS receiver. I have had the situation before where a VHF radio was interferring with a GPS power supply. You would key the radio and the GPS would switch off. Turns out the GPS power supply lead was a good length to pick up vhf nicely.

Was your VHF radio hot keyed? I doubt that too.

When you fully extend your VHF antenna are you interfering with your GPS antenna or cabling in anyway, assuming its external. Might wanna have a look at that. If not its probably coincidence. Try it again a few more times.

    Hope this helps mate.

there has to be some other issue here.

is there something else you are doing differently?

Can you replicate the situation in your driveway?

Were you running both GPS units?

    Have you checked connections?

    Do they fix now?

    cheers
Its the details, those little details, that make the difference.

can put the aerial fully up at home and it does the same thing...all i get is searching on the gps units no gps fix.....only use 1 as a gps and use the other as a sounder...is more a backup incase one sh#ts itself while out fishing...could understand 1 not getting a fix but to have 2 not get a gps fix seemed strange to me..i'm not real good on the electric side of things...when the aerail if fully erect it would be aprox 1 foot above the canopy and whe 3/4 the way up wouldn't be over the canopy..hte radio is aprox 2 foot below where the gps antanna's are

    strange...

Next time you put the VHF antenna all the way up, would be curious to know if you get a fix when you disconnect the VHF antenna lead from the back of the radio.

Agree with oldboot, it sounds like another issue. Your affecting the equipment inadvertently when puting the antenna all the way up.
