Hey all,
We had a leave app approved from the missus, so where should we go? with favourable reports we decided to venture back to Lake Awoonga after not being there for over 2 years. We drove up there in very rainy conditions and could feel the enthusiasm being slowely drained however spirits were very high. We drove passed the gates of Monduran where our instincts wanted us to via right.
We got to the camping grounds at the lake and were quite disappointed that nothing much had been done with the grounds. We put the tents up in the rain in record time and got on the water by 10am Saturday.
The lake has so much water in it now, so where to start? We decided to try our old haunts and use our instinct from there. The windward points near Dingo Is were the areas of choice and threw on a modified X-Rap. I wasn't disappointed, and after 30 mins of casting had my first strike and landed a healthy 92cm Girl. High fives all around and slipped her back into the water in quick time for someone else to enjoy. At this time we had light rain, wind and 22oC water temps, so not exactly favourable conditions. We had a few more hits in this area before we decided to have a look around for areas for night fishing.
We found an excellent bay that held a healthy habitat of weed and lillies, so this way point was logged for later. We fished on for nothing else for the day.
When we arrived on dark we were welcomed with Barra boofing all around and was like that for a few hours. We tried everything and had hit after hit however nothing commited so the thinking caps went on. We modified soft plastics into a beetle spin configuration, and also tried some plastics we were given to trial, that had come in from the States. These worked a treat and caught a few Barra and Bass.
The next day we ventured up the Dam and fished mainly in the weeds in approx 1m water depth. We spooked many fish, short striked by many and caught 3 fish for the day. 1 on X-Rap, 1 on a modified Codman spinnerbait and 1 on a modified slickrig. Just on these slickrigs, we were quite annoyed on the quality of these plastics when they come out of the packet. You pay for 6-8 in a pack and maybe one in the pack comes out straight and swims fine and the others come out twisted and bent. Maybe they should come in plastic packets like the hollowbellies to keep the integrity of the shapes. Just my thoughts.
Anyway, that evening we tried a bay in New Zealand Gully and then tied up in last evenings spot and stayed around until around midnight. Same again, the barra were boofing all around and managed a few for the night. These were caught on walk the dog lures and fizzers.
All in all we had a very rewarding and stres free weekend and can't wait to head up that way again.
Tight lines.
