    alvey 45C/C17

i've got a bid going on ebay for this reel. it is a "side cast deep sea trolling" reel.
it looks like it has a bit of experience, but still in useable shape.
is this worth my time trying to get this, or is it a clunker? how much would you pay for it at a garage sale?
    thanks,
    joe

    Hi,
Should be 450 C 1 7. Being 4 1/2 inch wide and a drag model. The C stands for drag and the 7 being production number. The 1 means bakelite spool.
At a garage sale around $10-20.
    Hope this helps.

    Thought it was that reel.
I'd think it would be very hard work deep sea or trolling with that Alvey. They were used for estuary fishing back in the 50's or so.

what i had in mind was using it on a 9 wgt fly rod for salmon fishing in rivers. i've seen other guys with side cast reels use them quite effectively for that type of fishing. we don't use fly line, rather mono or braid and floats with salmon eggs or flys to drift the rapids and deep pools. it's an advantage to be able to cast a ways, but for control of the drift a spinning reel is awkward.
the bid is currently $12, with a $10 handling fee. i might spend up to $25 total on it.
thanks a bunch for the insight!
