    Offshore in a Tinny

Hi just wondering how many of you out there go offshore in a Tinny? If so how far do you go and what size boat do you have and how is it rigged up? Come on people share some Photos of your Offshore Tinny Rig

    Cheers Mike

    Re: Offshore in a Tinny

Welcome. There is at least one thread on this that went on and on...have a search and see what you find. The bottom line is you can go as far as you are crazy enough (or sane enough depending on your perspective) and have fuel to go...

    Re: Offshore in a Tinny

    Hi PK,
I went offshore in my old tinny plenty of times, mostly I didnt go much more than a mile offshore but up to 15 miles from the bar. On occasion I went up to 15 mile offshore. I have to admit that I did scare myself at times, offshore waves and chop can change to be big and uncomfortable really quick in a little boat. My boat had all the legal requirements for offshore in NSW, radio, compass, epirb, flares etc. I took an extra 20L of fuel when I went offshore, my boat was a 4.2m Stessco Catcher w/40hp Etec. If I was solo I wore my life jacket all the time as well as had the kill switch lanyard attached to my jacket.
Offshore in small boats can be great fun but as I said earlier, the conditions can change really quick, a 2-3 foot messy sloppy chop makes for a very slow and sometimes very rough trip home.

Check out willo's vidio ( spanish macs in the slop) he's in a 4.2 tinny and scores great fish,

I've had my 4.2 outside quite a few times, ya just gotta look for nice days, if not it's slow going, wet and can be hard on your bones, it feels like the boat just keeps getting smaller and smaller the further you head out, Cheers

    Re: Offshore in a Tinny

I take my 400 hornet with 40etec off Coffs solo - I havent ventured very far - only to the lighthouse.

Just back from a trip to South End up near Gladstone - spent the week out and about in a 4.4m hornet with 60yam.

Have all the safety gear required.

Our style of boat is very low and doesnt really lend itself to the conditions - but we got outside everyday at Gladstone 15-18knot winds - thats about the max.

Went out to Rock Cod Shoals, should have been more organsied and gone out to Masthead but would have packed a 20L extra fuel onboard. We were going about 40klm offshore.

I have been out at Hutchies and decided that it is about time to pull the pick as it is starting to get a bit to ugly and there were still a couple of guys in small tinnys hanging around. I did wonder weather to hang with them but then they were making no signs of moving so off i went. Maybe I am just a wuss or maybe they are just foolish

    Re: Offshore in a Tinny

There isn't much of a problem with it unless you have to cross a bar when you get back. Small tinnies tend to get interesting with 25 knots of breeze or more, which is only compounded by swell. At the end of the day depends how confident you are.

    Re: Offshore in a Tinny

Friend of mine goes regular over to Goulburn Island from the mainland. In a 4mt Hornet. He has mentioned a few hairy moments, but it doesnt stop him.
I cross channels in my 4.5 Souix, when it blowing 30knots. this scares the shit outta me. But it can be done.
Have you seen the video on here called "Macks in the slop" or something? I think THATS the bloke to ask!!

Either way that's a hell run for a hornet.....

    Re: Offshore in a Tinny

Used to take my 445 Sioux offshore all the time (see avatar) Caught a couple of marlin and macks from it. Never unsafe just uncomfortable. That was when I lived down south and you didnt have to travel big distances. Different story up here with about 25km or so just to get to the bar.
Still it is very do able. Places like palm beach reef etc would be easier in a smaller boat i would imagine.
