Noosa Flathead - lost fish and rod

Fished Noosa near the mouth last week with the kayak. Parked and tossed a plastic off the sandbank, first throw and bam I'm on to a beaudy. Faught for quite a while and finally got him to the bank, but about a metre Flathead and the landing net was about 50m away in the yak. So what do I do, try and grab the leader as I was only on 6lb line and too big and heavy to drag up the bank. As I held the rod back behind me to grab the leader he took off at a great rate of knots and the rod exploded into about 4 pieces. Then the line broke and all I could do was sit and smile (& silently curse) as he left me to my miseries.

Lesson for those with the new rods, don't put too much pressure on the butt end. It was my fault looking back on how I handled the situation. Rod was a 6'6" Strudwick SoftBod 2-4kg.

At least it gave me a 'one that got away' fish story !!!

Were u holding onto the actual blank? because in higher graphite rods you shouldt do that while the rod is under pressure.

No - I had hold of the actual cork grip, but looking back I had too much of a bend in the rod, ie. holding it sort of backwards so that I could grab the leader. Won't be doing that again. It appears it was my fault, lessons learnt!! You'd think after all these years I would have know better!!

I always consider it to be a fight between Angler and Fish. Sometimes you win, sometimes they win. If you win they lose their life, so it is sort of fair to have lost just a little more than pride through your mishandling of the gear. The monster that got away is a good story. Isn't a metre long Flattie called a crocodile? Were you down nudgee way?

    Hahaha good one Chris!

Bad luck Greg, something similar has, or will, happen to all of us when out fishing.
