    Feed of Flatties

Went out yesterday morning with an idea of getting a few flatty fillets as I haven't had a feed of flatties for a while. Idea was to leave my place at 5am but of course my brother was late (I really hate that when people are late) so didn't get to the Jacob's well ramp till well after 6am.

Got out to my favorite spot for flatties and after about 20mins without even a touch decided to head over to a new weed bed that I have been meaning to try out. I anchored up in 1m of water and starting casting and on my first cast got a 39 1/2 cm model......hmmmm thought it was going to be one of those days.

But then my brother hooked up on a 45cm flatty......nicely landed and kept casting. Over the next short while we caught 12 more fish and had 5 in the esky from 42cm to 53cm. Looked at my watch and realised it was only 0755. OMG....I can't believe what a hot bite that was and I was anchored in one spot too. Decided to quit while were ahead and headed home feeling very pleased with myself. All fish not in the esky were released unharmed.

This is the first time I have ever caught my bag limit of anything so I am feeling pretty chuffed about that. All fish were caught on Pumpkinseed 3"berkley minnow grubs.

    Cheers guys,

    Bill

    Goodonya Bill!

    A stunning result.

Are you sure that you are not allowed to tow a lure or livie behind that ROV?

    Hey Charleville,

I have considered it mate haha.

Confidence is growing all the time, I feel like I have got the hang of the flatties and snapper. Once it gets a bit warmer I want to try for a mack or something pelagic.

I am going to start reading up on it...wish me luck.

    Cheers,

    Bill

Funny, isn't it? When you have it in your head that you are going to catch fish, most times you will.

Good luck with the next stage.

    Thanks Chief,

After all this time reading your reports about all the fish you catch, that is quite a compliment.

I have never had any luck with the Brissy river catching those threadies. Would love a lesson in catching those some time.

I went out again this morning and caught 3 (41 to 48cm) in the same spot and I lost count of the small ones.....then the pike moved in. Everything released as I have enough fillets in the freezer for now. There was alot more weed floating around this morning and made it a bit hard going. Back home and boat washed by 11am.

    Cheers,

    Bill

    Congratulations on a great session.

I understand that 5 flathead was probably more than enough for a couple of feeds but isn't the bag limit for 2 people 10 flathead?

Great session. Pumpkin seed is my go to SP colour at the moment for flatties. They seem to be doing all the damage in the Pine River .

    Hi Ray de R

Yes the bag limit is 5 per person, the five fish kept were all fish that I caught as my brother let all his go, actually the 13 fish were all legal(didn't count the undersize ones) so not only did I get over my bag and release the excess, my brother got his bag too but chose to release them. I have never seen the flatties so thick in one spot like that.

    Cheers,

    Bill
