The early model 3L donks had a pretty poor name to put it politely.

Seriously, your best off doing a Google search on "Nissan 3 litre engine problems" or something similiar. Have a look at any Patrol forum on the net and it will some become obvious what the major problems the early 3L donk experienced. .

That should provide you with enough light reading for the rest of tonight and most of tomorrow.....

Best of luck with your purchase.

    Cheers,
    Roo.

Re: Advice on buying Nissan Patrol

Having said all this, there is only 1 patrol 3 litre that my mate rebuilt himself and has had no problem. But he has changed everything internally and externally. It had blown up 3 times before he got it. So he is currently proving me wrong.

Isn't the problem with them overboosting?

Re: Advice on buying Nissan Patrol

dazza, if you can afford it chase down a series 4 or later[ late 2004 and on]as these arent so prone to letting go so i,m told
then get a pryo and boost gauge [cheap from the states]
    a dawes valve
    a needle valve
and an oil catch can [ this you can make ]
the needle and dawes vale will control erattic poost [ which you will see at times go as high as 30 psi[ thats not good ]
and block off your egr but only when you do the mods
as stated above check out patrol4x4 .com become a member and then let the reading begin
and if you want to yak call me

Or you could buy a car with an engine that the maufacturer gave a rat's arse about building. Any other patrol motor will do in that age group.

Thats just 1 of the many problems. Boosting under load, the waste gate was hitting at peak 22psi at times. But its mostly to do with the design of the engine itself with 2 crank ballancers at either end of the engine putting out countering bad vibrations through the engine + high revs. Cylinder 4 was the lowest port and sitting right under the intake was coping more boost than others/and fluids and would always be the first the crack. Blocking of cooling lines to turbo etc etc.

If you search there are full break downs and right ups on these engine faults. They where also blowing in europe and someone there decided to fix the problem for good and made full in chassi rebuild kits. I havnt heard anything more from the guys who used them. So they must be working.

Or you could look for a duel fuel patrol.

Something I heard, ( could be true? ) is there was a prob with the valves not getting enough oil and that their attemp to fix was to shorten the dipstick and stamp a new full oil level, so bacically they were running overfull all the time which only helped getting oil to the top end.

Re: Advice on buying Nissan Patrol

    Daz,

I have a 2003 Patrol and have a new ARE intercooler fitted along with a Provent catch can and a boost gauge. Its done 170k so far with a few issues being:

Cracked intercooler, the Nissan ones are crap, check to see if oil is on the top left corner, if so walk away, from what i can tell with the intercoolers, if they are going to go they tend to go in the 120-160k mark.

Provent catch can got 50 mils after 5000klms last time around as a guide ( as to what is going through the motors without it)

Ancillary bearings, ie in the Alternator, belt tensioner and water pump all get a bit suspect around the 160k mark,,, i just had the alternator bearing go which was fun? into the fan etc.

    MAF sensor, replace every 100k

I am sure that all Lancruisers out there are perfect and never have issues , but this is what i have learnt so far

With the overboosting issues, therre are a few forum jockeys who are self proclaimed experts on the Patrol forum...If your serious about a 3.0 patrol, ring up a proper diesel mechanic.

anyway thats my experience so far, and no aint selling it.
