Wonder how long it will take our mob of well meaning idiots to jump on the bandwagon.

We are contacting you to help us fight the proposed federal ban on all lead in fishing tackle.

On August 23, 2010, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was petitioned by the Center for Biological Diversity and four other organizations to ban all lead in fishing tackle under the Toxic Substances Control Act. This includes sinkers, jigs, weighted fly line, and components that contain lead such as brass and ballast in a wide variety of lures, including spinner blades, stick baits and more.

A lead ban would significantly add to the cost of fishing tackle. Alternative materials cost from 6 to 15 times more than lead.

The EPA has opened the petition for public comment. Please join us in opposing the ban by sending your comments to the EPA by no later than September 15th, 2010.

Do they have much scientific proof of just what damage the lead is doing? Do fish swallow sinkers that have are there due to tackle loss?
The problem here is as always there will be more general populace response in the negative than there ever could be from fishos in the positive.

If it wasn't so serious I would laugh. I googled the Centre of Biological Diversity and found their website. Looking at the press releases there was one about this mob of loonies petitioning the USEPA to ban lead in ammunition!
Here is the first paragraph:

WASHINGTON— Congressional documents contradict the Environmental Protection Agency’s recent claim that it doesn’t have the authority to regulate toxic lead bullets and shot that commonly kill and harm bald eagles, trumpeter swans, endangered California condors and other wildlife. The EPA last month denied a petition to ban lead ammunition and require nontoxic alternatives for use in hunting. But the language of the Toxic Substances Control Act, as well as the Senate and House reports on the legislative history and intent of the Act, run counter to the EPA’s claim, in an Aug. 27 letter rejecting the lead ammunition portion of the petition, that it lacks regulatory authority

So according to these clowns bullets harm and kill bald eagles, condors, swans and other wildlife. Who would have thought it hey? But if we hunt with ammunition that is made of something other than lead it wont hurt these species? Perhaps ammo should be made of PlayDo to increase the biodiversity.

Seriously if something gets hit by a bullet weather it be lead or otherwise, its gonna hurt- thats the bloody idea! Same goes with lead sinkers- how is it harmful to the oceans' bioldiversity in comparison with say longlining, cyanide fishing etc etc. Just another avenue they have dreamed up to make it more difficult for normal humans with some common sense to enjoy their way of life. Im not sure if we should be worried about this as this group seem very out there but it is America and stranger things have happened. The EPAs rejection of this proposal is promising however.

Lead shot is banned in shot gun shells for New Zealand hunting ! It's not so much for the animal your aiming at but the stuff that misses and ends up in the stream/pond which then gets eaten by ducks/swans/fish etc. I do agree though that for rifle projectile it's pointless!

FYI lead shot has been banned in the USA since the early 90's afaik its mainly for wildfowl hunting

Prove to me that its creating a problem and THEN and ONLY THEN can I make an informed decision.I only hope governments think the same way.

We already have at least one dam in Qld ( Baroon Pocket) where lead sinkers is totally banned.The rangers also have the power to inspect all craft and if the batteries are not correctly secured so that they do not fall out in the event of a rollover/sinking you are ordered off the water.
These rules were in place when the dam was under the control of aquagen. Dont know what has happened since tis been taken over by SEQ water.
In the UK they are paranoid about their swans nad lead nshot and sinkers are banned in several areas.
In the early 90s a 400 site campground was shut down because a pair of swans were nesting on the lake and started chasing anyone nwho came near the lake. When people complained to the council they simply shut down the campground because the swans are protected.
