Re: tigers
G'Day Ian,
Mate Tigers really are a nice easy way to dress up a rod. I've been doing quite a few lately and every one is different. If you go into the Rodbuilding.org site and look up Doc Ski's tigers you'll see the endless possibilities.
I like to use 2 or sometime 3 contrasting colours in the base wrap which I wrap firmly but not too tight. Burnish the whole wrap in different directions etc and spend some time on it. You should be able to see the thread movement after a while. I always CP mine with 2-3 coats. Then I cover with 2 coats of epoxy and make them fairly thick coats. The thickness of the coats gives the depth in the wrap between layers.
When the epoxy is good and dry (48 hours) I wrap the top layer. The colour of the top layer becomes your dominant colour. Sometimes black is the best because it makes the wrap more subtle but it's all a matter of experimenting. Wrap two threads at the same time in the OPPOSITE direction of your first layer. I like to use 1 size A and 1 size C thread together. The C thread for me becomes the discard thread. When you finish the top layer, burnish it in random directions. At this point I use a hair dryer to gently heat the wrap for 15-20 seconds. Carefully unwrap your discard thread being carefull not to move the main colour. You should see the pattern come through. Don't despair too much if you don't see much because sometimes the pattern comes out more after you apply the finishing coats of epoxy. I also use CP over the top layer to maintain the thread colour.
Good luck
