Ian,
Once you set the tension then don't touch it.
You want it firm, but not too tight or it's hard to pack the threads later.
Then it's just a matter of tightening the design threads as you go.
Basically, every time you pick up a thread to move to the left, give it a gentle pull to both keep it straight and take out any slack.
That way when you're finished you've already got it pretty well packed and pulled.

Got some finish on finally.
Decided not to do the Lions weave (I'll save that for another rod)
Opted for some marbling instead on the foregrip.
