Looked at it myself 12 months ago but doctors got in the way. Research showed it as variable dirt, depending on when last graded, no fuel after leaving Chillagoe (500 odd km) Follows Gilbert Riv? for a fair distance but have been told that no camping. Depends on how fast you travel. Long 1 day trip but met a couple who knew the area & they were spending a month there. Bill

Decided to slip around the other way......we have plenty of dirt on the rest of the trip.....wasnt the petrol bit....just the fact we were going to do it in one run and if the road was shitty...make it a very long one

Gday juju, have not been through that road yet but spoke to a group of motorbike riders who were heading from Karumba to Musgrave Roadhouse and on to the Cape , rather than going to chillagoe .
They said because of the late wet the Mitchell river was still up and they may have to float there bikes over!.
Would be a good drive with a tinny and some time to check out the rivers and creeks.
    Scott
