    Pin bar

    Hi all,
just wondering what the pin bar is like at the moment- thinking of going over it tomorrow- got the route of a regular crosser but just thought I'd see what you guys reckon. Should be flat but if anyone else is going over it tomorrow maybe I could tag along. Cheers

but only a fool FOLLOWS someone across a bar,

you need to judge for yourself.

There must be lots of fools out there as there always seems to be some one waiting to follow me in at the south passage.

vmr do a bar check at Jacobs well if you give them a call by phone or radio if you are on the water they will give you current details but the pin bar is a tricky bar and i recommend local knowledge,

a good look at Google earth will show you the deeper track to give you some idea however this is not up to date,so just use it as a guide use caution and good luck.

Try reading it again Scott............someone going arse up is going to create a lot of clutter also, on our bar , timing is all important.

I see too many people nearly come unstuck trying to follow someone who actually does know what they are doing,

learning where the line to follow comes from sitting and watching others cross a bar,
NOT BY BLINDLY FOLLOWING THEM, these are definitely the actions of a fool.

perhaps someone who has no idea should do some research.........THEN have a go.....try looking at the bar from a vantage point that allows a good view BEFORE you approach it in your boat !!!!!!!!!!!!

Too many times now I have been followed into the Ballina bar, ........IDIOTS
on more than one occasion they have endangered me and my crew by their actions.

I believe another boat has gone over on Ballina bar in the last week,
    but dont know the story.

I am happy to help anyone, but will NEVER suggest that another boat follows me without making their own decision to cross.

Pull ya head in Muzz, if you know nothing about this bar better to keep your opinions to yourself.

The bloke made a simple enquiry and you've appointed yourself judge, jury and executioner.

Back on topic, I was at the Pin this morning - it was flat and the channel is nice and wide.

    Straight back at ya 'tuffy

I notice that not one of you has given this guy ANY advice, except for GR Hilly...

My advice to this guy was to go and look, try to learn how the bar works,
not just follow the first box-head that puts his hand up,
    read it again.
chances are that he will know less than you do.......

Any of you guys going to offer to take responsibility if he follows you???

Maybe I am just used to being more cautious on our bar than you guys are on yours!!!

    Re: Pin bar

pin bar i have crossed about 6 - 10 times
each time ive looked for water with no white caps.... if its breaking all the way across then go home. But usually there is a big gutter to the south but we always just run straight east and keep your eyes peeled!

    Re: Pin bar

I must say the South Passage Bar has some twists and turns to all 3 routes. It is best to stay a wave or 2 away from the boat in front but any further and you can be lost in the bar very quickly. That is my experience but I wanted the route so I had to follow someone.
I am aware of the dangers of bars and have turned around plenty of times before and will continue to put my boats (and passengers) safety first and foremost over the chance of catching a fish.

    Cheers
    Chris
