Ciguatera.
I would eat them no worries.
There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences. P.J. O'Rourke
The no take is only for the ones caught inside the bay. Anything from Rooneys and out to sea has no restrictions, thus not considered a risk.
Hard to tell though because they move around a lot. They say that anything up to about 14kg is not a problem no matter where they are caught, and only a potential consideration in the bigger ones.
Being caught outside, I would eat them.
Caught a couple to about 12kg at Rooneys a few months ago and they were fine. But I understand your concern. If in doubt then maybe use yourself as a guinea pig and have some for lunch before feeding the family. From what I have read, you will know fairly soon. I did that with mine.
I think there will always be some risk. A few years ago, one of the guys on this site caught one off the Gold Coast and the whole family and some friends all got sick as they had a get together barbie. But this is pretty rare.
Would be a huge waster of fillets if you dump it.
Feed a piece to your neighbours pet cat, if it has ciga. it will kill it!
Apparently cats cannot tolerate it at all. Here's an extract off a website i found;
"It is not possible to detect the toxin before eating the fish, which appear quite healthy and the taste and smell of the flesh is not affected.
Probably the simplest precaution is not to eat the fish if your hands feel numb after cleaning it, or if there is any suggestion of a stinging sensation after skinning or filleting it.
Some authorities recommend feeding the viscera of the fish to a cat and confine it for observation. However, the cat may vomit, become uncoordinated, or even die within 48 hours. This is obviously extremely hard on the poor cat, and a more humane option should be entertained first. Testing a small amount of fish flesh on a healthy adult in your party the night before is a better solution, if you can find a willing victim.
The poison is very stable and resistant to heat and drying, so cooking does not deactivate the poison. Soaking the fish won't work either as the poison is not water soluble. Ciguatera fish poison can now be detected. OceanIT has created Cigua-Check™, the first commercialized ciguatera fish poison test kit in the world. For more information about Ciguatera, and the Cigua-Check™ test kit, please visit the Cigua website. "
I've heard of another way to tell if a fish has ciga from examples the islanders use. Apparently they leave the fish out and if the flies don't gather its no good, if the flies come in the chow down then the fish is safe. Dunno how well it works though, maybe cut a small bit off and leave it outside for a couple of hours to test theory. Whether or not the flies gather, eat a bit yourself and see if the anecdote rings true.
It's not unheard of to get ciga in fish as small as 10kg, one of our local fishing 'identities' poisoned his whole family with a 10kg spaniard, a size that was thought to be safe. I personally don't take them over 8kg, the school size models are better eating IMO.
Interesting theory there scott .But ive seen flies crawlin on rotten carcasses ,dog turds ,etc and you would never eat any of that.So bit resevered on that one m8.
The islander boys also put a coin on the fish when they bake it. If the coin changes colour the discard if stays the same they eat (parts of Fiji) I wont trust that either.

Ive looked into cigua check test kit and it works out to about 160 bucks delivered and you only get three tests. thats over fifty bucks per fish, I dont think its worth it. thank you all for the replies. The aussie company that used to sell it stopped inporting it from the states coz it was to hard to get it through customs. now there's a business venture for someone who's capable.
