Warning to boat sellers on boatsales or boatpoint - beware of cole contrell

    Hey guys,

I joined this forum just to warn you all about this jerk that has been ripping people off. It is a very looong post with a lot of information but please read it as it might save you $1000 of your hard earned money!

It started when I got an sms from this number 0408832914 saying
"Goodday seller is the boat still available for sales... kindly get back to me with this email coletrell@hotmail.com so that we can sort things out."

I sent him an email saying it was still for sale and sent my home number in case it was more convenient.

    his reply was
"Thanks for the swift response...i am willing to know the lowest price of the boat.due to the nature of my job and location...i will not be able to come for inspection,am a very busy type as i work long hours everyday,i have gone through your advertisement and i am satisfied with it.
]As per the pick up don't worry about that because i have my own private courier company and the courier services company will will be coming to pick it up.
With the issue of my details, transferring the name of ownership and signing of all paperwork will be done by the courier services company agent so you don't have to worry about that.
I'll like you to send me your address so that the courier services company can figure it out[/FONT]
and come for the pick up and other necessary things....more so,send me your
PayPal details(PayPal email) so i can pay in."

I told him we would go to a lower price and gave him our address and my paypal email address (idiot!!!!) as I didnt see anything dodgy as yet. The next email got alarm bells ringing though
    he said

"]I was just about to make the payment when i had this little problem with the picking up,Igot an email from my agent...he said he won't come for the pick up unless i pay him the]agent commission fee first in order to be able to schedule suitable a pick up date and time
and my pick up agent Headquarters is in the United Kingdom and all commission payments made for pick up from anywhere in the world is sent to their Headquarters in the Uk and the only form of payments they accept is western union money transfer and i tried to pay online (www.westernunion.com) but it requires a credit card to make the transfer online which i don't have access to and there is no post office on sea.(there is usually a western union section in most post offices).
[]So now i will include the $950 they charged to pick it up and take it home(1st class]treatment)to the payments i will send through paypal. After receiving the confirmation email[,PayPal after i have made the payments, i will need you to help me send the $950 to my pick up agent through western union money transfer. The western union money transfer can be made at a post office or online at www.westernunion.com.I will be making the payments shortly and will email you as soon as am done"

]I thought ooh western union, thats a bit dodge, and rang my husband. He's got workmates who have been done over by this same bloke too. I replied and said I will not be payments on your behalf as I have been receiving a lot of fake emails and asked him which courier company he owned which has a HQ in the UK?

    today I received these emails.
I have just made the payment now and i expect paypal to have emailed you by now, check your paypal email address if you have been messaged yet, i sent $2,350 in all, i have decided to add the amount of $1,050 which i paid through paypal, So you can now wire the sum of $950 to my agent's Headquarters in UK via western union where they confirm all commission payment so that they can be able to schedule a suitable pick up date and time immediately.

As said earlier in my previous email, the western union transfer can be done at the post office as their is a western union section in all post office and can also be done via the internet(www.westernunion.com).I added extra $100 to cover the western union charges which shouldn't be more that $60-75 but just to be sure i added $100.
    [

I have got 2 emails almost word for word to that, and another very clever one today asking for a so called inspection to be done. They emailed me an inspection appointment for a-z-aotus.com, where they wanted credit card details to log on and make the appointment! All looked very legit too, I rang the home number the contact gave me and guess what, they had never heard of such person.

Be very careful, dont trust ANYONE that doesnt turn up on your door with cash for your boat.

This is just like an episode of ACA or TT.
Anyone who believes anything one of these knobs trying to buy from them is nuts.
If they don't appear at your door with the full amount for the item, don't release it, simple.
It belies belief that so many are still taken in by these scammers.
Here's hoping you were not duped too.

Haha! No, luckily I realised he was pretty dodgy early on, but unfortunately some people aren't as suspicious as me and trust that most people are doing the eighty by them.. I can't believe this dude is STILL using the same email address though, but that's good for tracing him. What he doesn't know is that now he's being tracked down by people that you don't want to be tracked down by. I hope they attach a car battery to his man parts!

I am surprised that anyone even sends a reply to those emails.

I did sell the cruiser via boatpoint...could not have been an easier transaction.

Gee for a moment there I thought you were going to say you were duped. There is always something that just doesn't "feel" right when you get these types of requests. And always look for poor grammar and spelling mistakes in fake accounts- note no "r" in the service@paypal address. Solution um......... delete!

There is people that do get done by these knobs.... buttholes.

I believe they have not actually broken any laws even to the point where you send the money. That makes them Very hard to eradicate because they cannot be convicted of anything.

There may be a law against that sort of solicitation in australia.

Buyer and Seller beware at all times on all fronts

    Cheers

I had this happen to me also but different names when I was selling my Seafarer and also again when selling a car on carsales. I didnt get ripped off as I looked into it more and rang ACCC as it didnt sound right. If it smells like a rat it generally is.

Yeah, I just put this on here in the hope I can help educate people to be aware of these f...bags. I sold stuff in eBay recently and had scammers trying to do me over on it too. It's just too easy these days for crims to steal online.. But that's ok, big brother is onto them! Ha!
Great to see so many people have read this thread!

Put my boat on boat sales this morning and got an email from Collins loop <collinsloop17@hotmail.com> at 10pm.
Returned email stating I was a Federal Police Officer and was aware of scams of this type and required his full details to run some checks.

Dont think I will be hearing from him again.
Experience is something you get right after you need it.

Re: Warning to boat sellers on boatsales or boatpoint - beware of cole contrell

The email seems to change but exact same scam is still going here was my latest response to a suss email by these idiots , btw my boat is listed for 13500

ok no problem i will be paying you $15,000 with my PayPal account because it's
attached to my bank account and its safe and very secure way to make
payment. If my mode of payment is accepted just send me your paypal
email address,(Paypal ID) or send me paypal payment request so i can
pay in right away. Make sure you get back to me so that i can make the
payment. I have a private courier agent that will handle the shipping
after payments has been made, so no shipping included.
And if you dont have a paypal account, you can easily go to
    www.paypal.com and sign up.
its very easy. i will call you later
    I await your reply asap.
