    Quick Tweed snapper

    Gents,

Did a quickie out from Tweed bar late this afternoon. The big swell meant we had to wait for the tide to turn before heading out.
Took along a business friend from town to my close in mark.
CURRENT ROARING. 2000rpm had us holding into the current. Out of gear we were doing 1.8knots to 2.9knots depending on whether going up or down the wave.

Wanted to floatline but it was really hard. Seagulls were picking up the pillie cubes 20m from the back of the boat.

Anyway experiment with various sinker sizes until I was getting close to the bottom. They were there but hard to get near and feel when the take had happened.

Got 4 snapper to 60cm. My friend was bottom bashing and got a sweep, moray eel, and port jackson shark.

All and all not a bad late afternoon.

Well done Brett ...sounds like you have that area sussed out....
Gotta be happy with a nice feed of snappa.

We were out a coupla weeks ago & scored our bag limit of nice Pearlies...they came out of 135 -145 M of water ....hard yakka, but well worth it.
Biggest went 5 kg ...defn a PB for me

    Cheers

    Gday Phil,

I gotta admit I'm starting to get used to this sort of fishing. The ground is only 3-4kms from the bar and only in 25-28m of water. It's fun on the light gear as well.

I remember the days of slogging out to the banks in Bogey for 2 hours and dropping down to 80-100m to get snaps and pearlies. Used to be $200 a trip then.

Now I'm about $10 - including bait/fuel and I can do it on a late afternoon whim.

I'm not knocking it that's for sure. Have said that I still need more time on the water to suss out a few more areas.

    Yeah Phil,

It's a pretty simple formula that works most of the time. Just got to be prepared to a make a few subtle changes dependent on conditions.

Speaking of shallow water fishing, while in Melbourne last weekend I was talking to a bloke in a tackle shop who had just returned from their annual snapper trip to South Australia. They fish ground 6-8m deep and were catching snapper to 25lbs

They were having a ball - right up to the night when a pro went in and took a reported 400kgs - landed at the local co-op the next day. Can't blame him - he was doing his job but the boys struggled after that.

That would be fun though - 25lb snapper in 6-8m of water on a soft plastic set-up. Might be worth the trip.

    Brett
