I recon the only way a non politicaly sanctioned atri will be built is illegaly.

And as some have said, more of that goes on than some know.

Ther is a well known arti, up Hervey bay way, called "the washing machines"...a certain local fisho was also a local washing machine repairer...he built it over decades, disposeing of dead washing machines.

A certain brisbane fishing identity "is runoured" to have a programe of liberating ferral shopping trollies and giveing them a new home yet to be discovererd by others.

Brisbane city coulcill has thousands of impounded shoppin trollies, that the supermarkets wont cough up to get back.....I recon they would make great arti material.

Aparantly those piles from the hornybrook are going over to harries.....cheaper than paying otherwise dospose of them.

I believe ther are lots of people interested in these ideas.

    Hehehehe,
I could imagine playing out one of those trolleys on a jigging outfit.
I bet it wouldnt come up straight

I wonder if I could strap an old washing machine to my yak and take it out and.......

Get a bit of weed growth thru a shoping trolly and it aint going anywhere fast.

One clean up australia day, a certain local go get em politician went trolly fishing in the local creeks with a reef pick and a length of rope and a few mates.....they got plenty of easy ones.... those that had plenty of weeds growing thru them, put up a pretty good fight..even with half the local sub-branch heaving on the rope

    cheers

Shopping trolleys would be great material being stainless they would last a lot longer than a lot of things. The old concrete mixer barrels with some big holes cut in the sides would be another good one. Welded Reo mesh could be cheaply made into any shape you wanted and weighted down.

I think the biggest point would be finding areas that trawlers (offshore) will not go into and destroy it and or cause potential danger to the boat. That may be simply enhancing already suitible areas with rubble bottom.

I was pretty sure that shopping trollies were chrome plated steel.... but even so they are a pretty clean and entirely suitable reef foundation.

Steel car rims..particularly if welded togeter into structures would work well......for that matter anything heavy and steel.

as for the locations...well that is the sticking point.

    Oldboot,

I was thinking the same thing about the steel rims. Using 12 of them to make a single structure. 4 x 3rims welded together in the shape of the old Horse Caltrop. That way you not only have a fantastic fish atracting structure you also have one that when chucked over the side of the boat will land perfectly every time.

    Re: Artificial reefs

I think I have a problem...I'm starting to look at all sorts of things and seeing artificial reef potential.

    milk crates

bread trays...but the oyster blokes nab all those

    brake drums & disk rotors

    engine blocks

    besser bricks

    washing machines and driers

    old PC cases

wood stoves that are past it.

Burnt out car wrecks would be choice because all the oil, rubber, plastic and paint would be gone

I can just see little fishies happily swimming in and out of the holes in this stuff.

I recon if it was legal.....I'd be.. migging together every bit of scrap steel I could lay my hands on.

    cheers
