The FA series was also a good reel, this is the series prior to the SW. You can find brand new ones for sale on ebay in the US.

Apart from the latest SW series (?), are there any stella series that are standouts and worth buying from the net?
Want a top level reel in the 10000-12000 range but the latest SWs are just above my wife's budget!
Regards, Rob.

Jeez pommy thats high end tailor gear mate
Cheeky bugger!
You're right for the moment, but I'm getting some gear in for the long run.
The missus went back to work this year and so we are quite a lot better off. The kids are now 5 and 6 and in the next few years we will be doing the round Oz trip and also Fiji/Indo islands and elsewhere in the next 5 years.
I'm also sick of "cheap" reels giving up the ghost! Banax SX 5000 and 3000 (supposedly indistuctible) have bearing problems after 2 years, Tierra 4000 after 18 months, Banax iso 3000 after 1 year. Each reel $140, and I'm not hammering them but there is a lot of "spray" on the rocks.
Have an EmblemPro that is still going well and a Sustain 600 that is nice. Have a Penn Big Game that is my favourite rod, and only $85!
I want something that will last the course.
On the other hand, I do need to work out how to service my own reels! I had a nice Okuma reel that was a bit corroded on the outside but the inners were great, after 3 years. Tried to service it and the bail arm went to buggery. Now no good.
Trying to build up some nice gear for the future, is all.
Rob.
PS Deepfried.... I am not a "tackle whore!".
In the medium size Reel range the new SW Twinpowers are basically a budget Stella, it has a different Body and Spool, 11 bearings instead of 15 but the drag and a most mechanicals are the same.
Limit your Catch - Don't Catch your Limit
Well, Shimano has just released a new range of stella-looking reels for a fraction of the price: http://www.plat.co.jp/shop/catalog/p...on-8000pg.html
I think that should be good-enough for tailor!
If you learn to service your own reels, they will potentially last you decades!
Alan Tanis' pictorials are superb; wouldn't be too many reels he hasn't covered....

In the tackle forum asking about a reel
I needed a stella to stop the train that bricked me yesterday but other than that you didnt miss much. Your knee is going to have to get better real soon Rob or you need to develop some aussie tuffness and come and have a go at them.
GPB... had a look at the twin powers, but they are as expensive as the stellas on the net.
See Mark! Not just tailor!
Scotty! Was that on 30lb? I'm currently off work with a bad chest infection. Heaps of antibiotics etc. Have no energy for anything, never mind a scramble over the stones.
See the specialist on the 17th about the knee. All very frustrating!

I know Rob...and your entitled to nice gear....I personally baulk at the idea of paying that for a reel....its the stingey basta*d in me...I ended up with a spheros 14000 which stops just about anything that swims on the rocks here. Still have the option of upgrading the drag and handle if need be. Its a rough environment the rocks, past experience tells me that there are always falls and tumbles, dropped gear and of course lots of salt spray. Given those factors I often question the use of top of the line gear in that environment. Hope your chest infection and knee come good soon so you can get amongst some..
Cheers
Hmmmm,
I've broken or thrown away more middle to bottom end Shimano spinning reels than I care to count.
A stella might be the goods but then again it would be an expensive exercise if it didnt work out.
I would recommend the Shimano Navi Supership 8000 available on Ebay for a modest cost. Given it an absolute flogging and nothing has broken , worn out or fallen off yet.
Not available in Australia ( probly too good )
Im thinking about havin a garage sale to sell all of my worn out spinning reel handles
Some of the full metal Penn Applause range are good but the handles wear out.
Some of the low to middle range shimano is ok but the handles break off.
Some of the Okumas are ok but the reel foot breaks off.
Geez, maybe I should get an Alvey??
Penn is okay, at least it only wears out and doesnt snap off.
I service all my reels every second trip in saltwater.
I do a lot of casting, apparently!!
Hey deepfried, U bin hangin around train stations again
Cheers, Uncle Steve.
Hey Steve,Hey deepfried, U bin hangin around train stations again
Yeh hanging around the stations that have silver sided trains that leave with my poppers and metals.
I have been having troubles with some GTs and bommies and it is starting to get too me when other guys have landed some bigger than mine. In time i will get the big one though.
Rob,
have you thought of gettin the Mrs a second job as well? That way you could get 2 SW's
She's doing all the work as it is at the moment. I have had borderline pneumonia for a week and a half and havn't done much at all. Currently lying in bed while Deepfried is out there, repeatedly getting busted off.
The FAs seem quite a bit heavier than the SWs but have interchangable spolls, whereas the SW 10000 doesn't seem to.
Online the FAs are a bit cheaper, but both seem to cheaper than the Twinpower SW that has the same specs. Twinpowers are also more expensive on the net than from tackle shops here.
Will look a bit longer and check more prices.
Rob.
