    Jungle Fever

My mate Bob had escaped the Sydney winter for a long weekend in Cairns, but as always was keen for a fish, so I arranged to meet him in Tully last Sunday.

We arrived at the first creek and it wasn't long before Bob nailed a nice fat sooty on a popper. Over the next few hours we walked the creek, throwing poppers and small Rapala minnows. Bob had a blinder, scoring three great JPs around the 40cm mark, plus numerous smaller models and more sootys. I managed a couple of JPs and sootys too, but not of the same quality as Bob's.

I spent all of last week working Cairns, so Nic made her way up to meet me on Friday afternoon. Today we drove back to Townsville, with a small diversion to the same creek. While the fishing was slow compared to last weekend, we both got a few sootys and JPs. The best sooty was a really fat and heavy fish of 35cm and the best JP was a similar length. The lures today were again the little Rapala count downs.

Top work Dave, Robbie A and Nic. Love the JPs and sooties! Some great little NQ streams you have found there. Are these fish all through the creeks up north, or are there certain streams that produce better than others? If so, what do you look for?

    Thanks for sharing!

    Cheers

    Re: Jungle Fever

Thanks for the replies. Yes, it has been a while since we've caught any fish worth bragging about but it was worth the wait, sort of

Roo, the JP is a great fish and would be a great target for your fly gear. Plus those rainforest lined creeks are just great places to fish!

Angus, I think we've either caught or seen JPs in every creek we've fished on the coastal side of the range bar one. Even on the eastern side of the Bruce Hwy in the flat country. One of those included under the Bruce Hwy bridge at Bluewater just north of Townsville. Given this, I'd tend to think they were in most of the eastern streams. Not much help I'm afraid, but that is what I've found. If there is anything I look for it is accessibility. So many of the streams are on private property.

    Regards,
    Dave.

Ha, the only boat boat building issues on my mind are that the new rig is going to be awesome and that it is now getting very close! So far as Bob out fishing me.... it won't happen again

    Awesome!

How far do you usually have to walk up those NQ rivers to get to unfished waters?

    Cheers
