    Jew Allocation

    Hi Girls n Guys,

Just sending this clipping out of a paper a mate down south sent recently.
Maybe it will give you something to ponder over and wonder just what are we leaving for future generations.

Im not against people trying to survive but maybe the governing body who makes this legislation should think long and hard about what is or is not sustainable.

We as fishos are probably all guilty of taking more than our fair share of the resource in the past but generally I think we are now getting into a conservation era.
We now are releasing a lot of the fish we catch and pretty much are thinking past today and into tomorrow.
I know for sure that I have never caught out a whole school of breeding fish on rod and reel in my life and would never let myself do so.
No doubt the governing body will scrutinize our catch and size limits and put the blame where it is often not deserved or warranted.
I felt a touch saddened by this report.
    Cheers, steve.

Uncle Steves fishing so i'll shed a little light on it before until he can get a better copy up. Basically a fishing report that goes into some detail on some pro mullet netters on the NSW mid coast. They are suppose to be targeting mullet. They are "allowed" a small bycatch of bream, blackfish, mulloway etc. A fish market report on July 21 indicates that 94 boxes of mulloway which included some huge fish up to 30kg was moved through the markets on that day. Apparently 35 boxes of mulloway came from the beaches on the mid Nth coast. Not a bad "bycatch". Sadly most of the fish on the beach are the bigger breading females. Sustainable?...not

Thanks for this rabbi, from what I can read it is a great article. I would love to know which paper this was in, I'm guessing the Manly Daily.
I will admit I do feel a certain gratification, although I am just one of many anglers who have been trying to bring this practice to the attention of the wider public for a number of years, although whether they care or not is another matter.
To add insult to injury, mulloway are re-stocked courtesy of the Rec Fishing Trust, paid for by NSW Rec Fishing Licences. The travelling beach haulers are laughing at us, I and mean that in all seriousness, mullet my ar#e.
I better not say any more, I'm losing my what remains of my composure just thinking about what they have done hereabouts over the last 6-7 years.

How terribly sad, would love to see the bread and butter fish taken from the commercial catch list, flathead, tailor, bream and jew.

The beach haulers don't see schools of fish, they just see dollar signs and the more they can grab the better. They don't give a rats a@#e about sustainability and the sooner its banned the better imo.

    Hey guys,
Got it from a very reliable source that its getting closer to home, mine anyway.
There was 2 tonne of big jew netted at Illuka just recently.

The jew are very spasmodic this season with only small runs of bigger fish n although there has been huge numbers of small fish the same applies. they still end up in a net somewhere.
I will admit though there has been quite a large number of school jew taken by amateur fishos. Probly explains the amount of campers and influx of cashed up tourists to this area.

I have been releasing more schoolies than I can count over the last 5 months but they have dried up now too.
At least I give them some chance of survival.
No chance at the back of a net.

I have a friend who was a pro fisher in Sth Africa and he was saying that netting for jew is now banned in parts over there and the pros have to line fish for them like everyone else.
    Sounds like a plan.

On a brighter note I went fishing for a jew yesty and came up with zip but I found a hole on the beach after dark and threw HB,s into it and every cast for an hour was knocked off by big tailor up to 3kg.
Did a catch n release session. Took my mind of the lack of jew for a little while.
    Much fun!!

    Cheers, Uncle Steve.

I'm still looking for my first jewie, so if that trend continues here, I might have a bit more of a chance.

    Cheers,

    Re: Jew Allocation

    Hi again.
I just received another report from the central coast of NSW that another 2 tonnes of jew ( mostly breeding fish)were netted in the last week or so.
If this trend continues I say Bring on the marine parks and shut everyone out!!!

Sustainable fishing, Ha, What a joke!!

    Steve.
