carp as bait

I have heard of people using strips of carp as bait offshore. Is this legal at all?

I do know you are forbidden to throw them back in the water.

what you have quoted is exactly correct, but when i was in an angling club in south aust we donated our carp to the crab and lobster fisherman for bait. Maybe it only applies to the same water they came from fresh or salt ????????

ive seen on a fishing show before the host catching carp and said they are great filleted flesh baits for snappper

It's illegal in QLD to have a live or dead carp in your possession.

They can drop viable eggs well after death.

When we stayed on the murray river in victoria we were told all carp caught had to be knifed and left high on the bank to die. Apparantley they are like worms if you cut them in half and return them to the water they will metamorphis into two new fish.

I've also heard of a friend of a friend who used carp flesh on the reef and got absolutely nothing on them so they might be a little urban myth that they're good bait.

kill them and chuck them as far as you can from the water dont use them for bait its not good practice and it is banned

Best off just keeping it away from any waterways.

The eggs will die very quickly after the fish dies and would still need to a male to fertilise them if they were released into the water, the rule's a generic one to cover all noxious fish because you can have fish like the tilapia that are mouth brooders and can have several hundred live young in the mouth that will survive if returned to the water

I know of a buisness that employes about a dozen or so chineese workers. They used to go down to the local creek and catch the carp and bring them back and throw them into the pool of the house their boss supplied. They loved them. I was down the river one day when they caught one, and I said you carnt eat them. They said, no carp good.

I live in NSW may be different rules however I have used carp to catch Murray Crayfish and I reckon its the best bait!

This year we bumped into the fishing inspector who seen the carp and didnt have an issue with it.

I have read the NSW handbook and I reckon maybe you cant use Redfin (English Perch ) as they carry a disease which every year has a big "KILL" amongst their numbers in places like Blowering Dam At Tumut and Hume Weir at Albury.

We have also used carp from down the southcaost ,Merimbula right the way up to Ballina and it has been very good gets a lot of rubbish fish of the rocks but out in the boat drifting sand its dynamite on flathead.

I have heard of the saltwater cray fisherman buying them for bait too

Its an interesting pont Hkconc makes.
Having lived overseas and travelled extensively I can tell you its a fact that we are by far a minority when it comes to the edibility of carp. And rightly so, they are indeed a noxious fish and shouldnt be ever released or used in any way in any of our waters. Totally agree!
But on the other issue I have had to listen to so much rubbish from Aussies who tell you they taste horrible, are full of bones, balah blah blah.
Millions of people around the world eat them and in fact in many nations especially in Europe and Asia they are a delicacy, and for example are the favored Christmas dish in Hungary.
I have had them served to me in many places and have had to eat them out of respect to others and have found them to taste, guess what...like fish!
But hey we might as well have a culture of them tasting horrible as it goes along with our national hatred of this terrible mistake to have them in our waters.
But we do waffle on around campfires with a heap of misinformed BS!

May all be true but I wonder if they had the choice of a carp or one of our reef fish, what would they say then........I know what I'd choose.
