The Type R was only produced for one company and only 50 were available at Tackle warehouse in the USA and it is only available in 7.3 gear ratio. Z2020 is a better reel, available here with full warranty and about the same $

The type R is available in Australia & it comes in two gear ratios 7.3 & 6.3:1 .

Its one hell of a reel - much better than the standard Zillion sha or ha's ....... and can be picked up for not much more coin.

As for the 2020 - its a damn fine reel (if you can tollerate the looks ) - but it come with a price tag of $300 + above the type R.

The Aussie Type R was supposed to have been available for the Aussie Tackle Show, however it was a bit slower than expected. They had a 7.3:1 version on display there, but were waiting on the 6.3:1. The Type R's available in the US at the time were around the $630 mark, the Aussie version must have cut the price somehow. I'll have to check them out.

my mate got 1 from the U.S. from an ebay store in August. land'd here for $450. dam nice reel, but the 7.3:1 gear ratio's just too quick (for me) for impoundment barra, which is what its intended purpose would have been. whent with a crazy cranker instead....and love it!!

    RRP US$399 .....

Locally Tacklewarehouse (camp hill) have them for as low as $460 with both ratios in stock

Top value when compared to a standard Zillion - certainly smoother with the feel of a PE - like the swept carbon handle too ..... better than the straight carbon handle on the HLC
I reckon with a HLC spool ...... it would be a smick reel

Any updates news about the type r? I am thinking of getting on to replace my 9 month old Chronach that has shit its self. I am very peeved about the quality of Shimano's baitcaster's. Is it just me or do you guys think that Shimano's quality has gone out the door over the last few years?

I have a Zillion that has copped an absolute hiding and is as good as the day I bought it and yet it has never been pulled apart, the new chronach lasted me 4 months of Barra work before it started playing up.

I was the most loyal Shimano customer out there with about 20 mid - top range reels in my stable yet the only Daiwa casting reels that I have bought are standard Zillions and I have never had a problem?

My Type R is going well for the limited use since I bought it . I think it is a little different to the recent models Chronarchs & would be totally opposite to the new Chronarch E - Its one tough reel but comes in smoother than the standard Zillion. The drag ( a sore point with Zillions) is quite good being smooth and powerful. Its certainly worth the extra coin - While I love the Zillion HLC as a light weight barra casting reel ...... The Type R will be around for a long time -

    Hi Nick -

Yep Shimano low profile Baitcasters are going to the dogs -- unless you buy a Core ( light weight) or Calais (Calais DC) for heavier applications. The Curado has its fans as a functional reel & its attractive price point . But agree - Its an abomination with what they have done to the Chronarchs - how can they go from such a awesome reel like the BSV and end up with the "E" ........ I always thought that each new model should be an enhancement on the previous one. Certainly when you look at the latest ABU Revos , Pfluegers , Quantum & Daiwas that is the case.

Does this mean that they have fixed the kick lever problem in the Revos?
