Forecast for Wednesday was 5 knots, For a change the weather gods smiled on me and it came true.
A mate and I headed out to Karamea banks for the day, In typical winter style you get early morning breeze until the lands heats up, So trip out took about 2 hours. but we got there ok and it almost glassed out by lunch.
Hit some deep water marks early for very small stuff no keepers.
So tried the banks about 8 o'clock and it was extremely slow. Very unusual for out there. We hardly boated a fish for 3 hours, we tried all corners of the banks for zip.
Tide change at 11am, The fish came on the chew. caught a heap of small red throat, threw heaps back at around 32-35cm mark, A few bigger ones thrown in, few trout and usual pelagic stuff.
We boated 1 trevally about 12kg and got blown to bits by a big school of larger ones. lost my fav octo jig to a masive GT.
I hooked a very large Cobia, but after a long tussle my damn leader snapped! bugger. Made the typical mistake of calling it for a shark and tightening the drag, only to realise to late it wasn't.
Once the run came back the fish totally shut down.So we headed home trying some red marks on the way, but not even a sniff.
Interestingly, all bigger fish were taken on Octo jigs. fish were very very timid in taking baits, was very hard to hook a keeper.
But we each chucked a Jig just off the bottom, left it in the rod holder and Bam, worked a treat. seemed to get more hook-ups not trying to work them, let the boat do the work.
Anyhow, had better and had worse trips, sure beats going to work.
