Hey guys looking to head out friday arvo in search for a feed of crabs. BUTTT i have been told that you wont catch crabs in winter? is this true... would it be better to put pots out in donnybrook for some muddies or out the front of beachmere for sandies.

mate i would try both,u get a few crabs in winter just not bucketloads...for me i find in about a month the muddies should be in reasonable numbers and are normally the better crabs full i mean...have just started to get my pots sorted now,

The two biggest Muddies I have seen were caught on a line in June after a fresh. The bigger one would have had trouble fitting in a pot
I can usually pick up a feed of Sandies in Winter but not in any numbers

way down here in the Illawarra we get Sandies (Blue Swimmers) almost all year round, but in the winter you need to work for them, and for some very obscure reason, Muddies are better in winter, who knows why that is the case.

How odd, that seems a reversal to the norm

yes, fully agree, during the summer there is a few muddies caught here and there, but during the winter when the crabbers are really working hard for a feed, they/we get more muddies than the summer, how weird is that! could it be that the traps are left in a bit longer or something? then again maybe you guys up North dont go in the winter as much, and so don't get any.

    Hi
Yesterday when we were whiting fishing we at Victoria Point we dropped a few pots for sandies, just to see what was about, because I don't normally crab in winter, but I had read reports of crabs being caught.

We had 3 pots and caught 4 crabs, however 3 were legal female, which were returned to the water and the male was uinder size so returned also.

We will have another shot at them in a couple of weeks.

    Cheers

    Hi Peter,

I tried to reply to you on saturday, but for some reason it did not work.

We ended up with half a dozen whiting, caught on yabbies that were pumped on the low tide the day before.

I saw on in your post that your busy for a couple of days this week.

Let me know when your free and feeling better again, and we will sort something out.

    Cheers
    Scott

some of the biggest (and fullest) bucks I've ever caught have been around the Pin in the middle of June - the pin seems to crab well all year round - but as others have said you do need to work a bit harder for them.

    Hello Scott.

I'll have to check my 7 pin wiring to see if the connections are correct. Only have left hand indicator and tailights work,

Stop light, reverse and right hand indicator did not work, either the wiring is not correct or the other blokes trailer wiring is dodgey too.

Re: muddis in winter or sandies

OK, my son went crabbing yesterday in Lake Illawarra, water was a very cool 11 degrees, (thats bloody cold) he got 3 good Blue Swimmers (Sandies) and 2 Muddies, so how the hell does that work! I would think crabs would need their beanies on (if they had a head) and a jumper to be out and about in that sort of temp water. So by that in the much warmer northern waters, they would be there all year, but you need to put in a bit more effort, but I can tell you, 3 nice fresh crabs for a winter "snack" is just as nice as in the summer.
