    New shocks for patrol

Hey guys just wondering what are a good reliable set of shocks that wont cost a million bucks for an 04 patrol i live in the territory so the old girl gets a fair test out on bush tracks and heavy corrugation and the stockos still on it are getting sad.

    Re: New shocks for patrol

    Hi Rob

I fitted non standard gas heavy duty shocks to my Patrol http://www.arb.com.au/products/old-m...argers-shocks/ and I think if I was able to do it over I would fit the standard Nissan ones. I also fitted the Poly air bags at the same time.

These heavy duty ones are way too stiff and would be absolutely useless on corugations as you would bounce all over the road.

Mine travel these days is 99.00 % on good roads and as a tractor towing a heavy boat the set up is OK but speed bumps must be taken slowly as you would with a sports car.

My original shockers were totally stuffed when I changed them but I sure had a more pleasant car like ride with them cf to the ubeaut fancy double acting heavy duty gas ones I have now. Probably be brilliant for slow off road mountain climbing tho.

    Cheers

Not Ranchos! unless in the last 4 years they have come up with ones that can handle the beating a car as heavy as yours will give them, great for jeeps though!.

I have Dobinsons on mine, ride is on the rougher side and will fade on the corrugations as all cheaper ones will but on the tar they do stop a lot of the boat like ride these cars can have, been reliable but plan to upgrade to Koni's, hard to go past them if your pockets are deep enough.

The propcomps are softly valved i think, so for corrugations on the cheap they would be fairly comfortable while waiting for them to start fading.

Choice in these is all about spending power, what's your maximum spend?

    Re: New shocks for patrol

ALL adjustable shocks pack up over time. Meaning the adjustable valves break off or get stuck in 1 possition. Even when you run them upside down which puts the adjustable valve ontop. So find the right setting. T

he only reason rancho's are crap is because rancho is so hard to deal with. They have a hard stand on returns or even their own fabrication problems.

You cant beat bore and shaft size. Tough dog is a good budget shock.

If price were no option what are the best shocks going around? If say you were planing on doing lots of corrugations over long periods for the back of a 4x4 or an offroad trailer?

Had XJS from TJM on my ute and they were a bit harsh and only lasted 3 years of Cape York trips - now have Old Man Emu - not sure of model and they are the ducks for what i do - have air bags as well as i have coils all round.

Most decent aftermarket shocks will be a 1000% improvement on your stock shocks though..

Rob, give the Mackay branch a call. Mine were half the price of ARB stuff & perform well.

    Same as Moffy,
OME and air bags in a GQ that lasted for 6 years until I sold it, did heaps of off-road adventures, heavily loaded and towing a boat trailer. Will put them on my Navara before my next trip. (jeez.... I miss the Patrol)

    Regards,

    Moffy and Richo

Are these what you have ?

    http://www.arb.com.au/products/old-m...argers-shocks/

I run 6lb in the poly air when un laden and go about 10 with the boat on.

I find them good on good roads but very stiff on rough and speed bumps.
    Thoughts?
