Repower 6050 Swordfish

Hi guys, I'm looking to repower my 1994 Savage 6050 Swordfish. And I am having no luck getting information on the transom capacity. It currently has a 115 Johnson Ocean Runner on the back. And I am looking to increase the horse power to 130 two stroke or 140 four stroke. I would welcome some advice.

140HP 4 stroke, it is hard to go past the tried and tested Suzuki I would reckon, but I am sure there would be lots of others, Honda have had a (I think) 135 for yonks as well. Might have some trouble finding a 2 stroke in that HP these days, I think Merc and E-tec is about all there is left, so that option is fairly limited now. Might be prudent to fid the weights of them all first, then the weight of your existing motor.

Your 115HP oceanRunner weighs approx 167Kg so call it 170 kg with prop and add the weight of the oil container and oil and assume your carrying about 180kg so you probably need to work off that if your changing from the same V4 ie either a 115 or 130 HP (same weight ) in the current Etec motors. Damn good motors those V4 OMCs and apart from fuel injection and computers etc they are not much changed in todays Etec version. I'm keeping my pair of 115 s as I cannot see the point in new ones that are more fussy re fuel even if they use a bit less, the cost to change hardly seems worth it IMHO

I have a feeling a 140 Suz is heavier and based on my mates twin 140 HP Suz s you will find a big drop in acceleration with that motor cf to the OMC BRP option. Depends what level of performance your happy with I guess.

Have you lost the rateing plate that tells what its rated to. My 5.4 lancer was rated to 100hp although an egg beater would have tested it. You could ask on fishnet what was the origional rateing as there were more sold in the south. As to the motor they should carry a four stroke OK I reckon. The 140 Zuk is a beautiful motor and so is the 150..

Just remember, the 140hp Suzuki only puts out about 127hp from memory.
Yeah its a good engine and nice and light, but dont expect its to be massively faster than your current engine. Having said that Im sure it'd be a perfect engine for your boat if your current engine pushes you at decent speeds.

Honda 135 weighs 217kg i think.
Suzuki 140 is 186kg
Yamaha 2 stroke 130 is only 167kg
All 115hp motors bar the Honda(220) are around 160-180kg

Not a great deal of choice in engines if you wanna keep transoms weight down

sounds like the Suzuki is the go weight wise I would reckon, and a good engine (not that the rest are not good motors)

Thanks guys, further research has revealed that the transom on the swordfish is rated for 135HP. Have been unable to find out what the maximum transom weight is. Not sure how you find this out when the manufacturer has been swollowed up by the Telwater company. I have been offered a good change over price by a local dealer on a 140HP Susuki. So I am keen to do the deal if the boat can handle it. What is the formular for converting kilowatts to HP?

i think you will find that is b/s( 140hp suzuki 127hp real )
the jap government only allows 2 % allowance for there hp rating for all engines and even though the world marine allowance is 10 % so dont see how that is possible maybe 137 hp i will find out the truth and post details.

the HP thing has been doing the rounds for years now, whether it is true or not is anyone's guess, and unless you have some sort of dyno to test it yourself, who cares? you are buying a 140HP, be happy with it.

hey mate, i have been corrected on the 2% allowance must of heard it on a website somewere, but i can confirm the 140 suzuki is 140hp
yeh your right noelm but some people just like knowing the specs i seen it every day when i sold motors most the time customers knew more than you,nothing wrong with researching a product.

fully agree, but unless it is 100% proven (and you care) then just buy the motor that suits your intended purpose, and it seems the motor needed here is 130/140HP and as light as you could find, kind of fits the Suzie right down to the ground if the weights posted sometime back are close to correct.

There is another way to work out max hp if its not marked on the hull, as per the Australian Standard As1799, as follows:

Australian Standards Calculation AS 1799

Length of boat x waterline beam width at transom x 16 less 67 then x 1.34 = hp you can use on your boat.

So for example: 6 m actual hull length (not incl bowsprit, pod etc), 2.14m actual beam width @ transom, the formula would be as follows:

6 X 2.14m =12.84 X 16 =205.44 less 67= 138.44kw X 1.34 =185.5 hp

A serious practical on water test has also to be done, at full throttle, mid trim setting, through an on water course,performing a 90 degree right angle turn, in a prescribed distance. Boat must not take on any water, cavitate severely or do anything nasty!

This would give you a good idea of what your hp boat could safely take.

Note the heading on the columns - ALL the numbers are in metric form. HP on the spreadsheet is in KW, torque is in NM - you need to convert it for HP and ft-lbs!

Go to the "models" tab and do a search for "DF" and it will take you right there. In the case of the DF-140 the power is listed at 102.97 - that's KW! Convert to Hp and it comes out 138.085.

Thanks to all who contributed to this thread.
I tracked down a guy in Melbourne who sold a number of Swordfish boats. His advice was that that boat was designed and built to take a 135Hp/ weight motor of that vintage, 1994. The only motor that came up on Google of that description was a Black Max 135, weight 170KG, 2kg more that the 115hp Ocean runner that is on the Swordfish now. The options I was considering included 135 HP opti (195kg) DF140 Susuki (191KG) and the 130 Etec (184KG). In the end it was price that made the difference and the Etec won by a cosiderable margin, a cou[le of grand from the dearest to cheapest. so hopfully the Etec wont see a spaner for a long time into the future.
