    Needed a Squid Fix

Weather wasn't that flash so been a while since we tackled a few squid so i watched the weather and called for a run this morning . Still was around the 15/20 but not to bad and took our time heading over to some islands to try our luck . Was extremely slow thru out the day with 2 small fella's coming into the boat and it wasn't till just on the tide did we end up scoring some huge fella's 15 in total and good to replenish the red bait stocks for the next trip and if the weather won't play the game well squidding i will be again. The kids had a ball with these huge fella's putting up an awesome fight, and a close call from an Osprey who tried to take a liking to a nice one we had caught while we were pulling him in .

    JT,

Just the kind of therapy you needed I bet.

Great catch and good on ya for sticking with it.

We walked the Ted Smout bridge today, as a family, so there was no hope of getting on the water.

Nice to see someone getting out though.

    Cheers,

    Steve

That haul is none too shabby. Well done. Bait, good feed or bit of both?
Is it possible to berley up squid or just cast and hope technique?

    Re: Needed a Squid Fix

I believe his berlying technique goes like this....

"Here squiddy squiddy squiddy....." then throws the jig in and he's on. You can be fishing in the same boat and get nothing.

Haha that's great Wags...the man certainly does have some magic mojo in those waters! Some day, (sighs), some day, i keep telling myself, I might have some mojo of my own. everytime I squid in our waters I'm always the one empty handed. And don;t start me on those damn plastics!!!

HAHAHA Wag's you are a wag . I've fished beside Wags an i can tell you he's hopeless
Oppss meant to think that Wags. Just kinding he try's oir is trying?

Always good to get a live bait off
The were a excellent fight so of the strongest one's we've come across and after tonight some of the sweetest.
Tried a few different things this time and if anyone comes across those 9 inch squid jigs grab them
And colour plays a massive part ................. They change every year the buggars

    Re: Needed a Squid Fix

Best way is persistence basically and work out when they are feeding we have thrown jigs for hours at them and nothing then all of a sudden BOOM they are on ...much like a woman i guss lol.
But yes berleying them works but also take note that using to much will give them a feed as well lol
But always good to have a pilly with a squid jig hook set up up it's bum out on a float if anchored and at times a slow troll with different coloured jigs out to find what attracts them . I have spent a fair few trips trying to track them down over the years.
We use hoods as calamari and the rest as bait and i tell ya the reds love them along with most other reefies.
But if you take the heads and cut in half and take the eyes beak and other stuff out and slowly skin the squid and try using the same method to cook the head and tentacles as you would rings or cut into squares you won't be disappointed

    Hey JT,

Very nice haul there. That part of the world is just magic, wouldn't mind getting a holiday house there

If you don't mind sharing ... where do you even start looking for squid - shallows, near structure, lee side etc? Any signs to look for?
