Go Pro camera

Can anyone give us a report on this type of camera, thought I might mount it in the boat to film the days action as it is ment to have a wide angle lens.

Have a look at the Vholdr CountourHD as well. We use these on the trailbikes.

I would strongly suggest the Go pro's if it is any chance of getting wet they sit in a waterproof cell as I am not sure about the "Vholdr or CountourHD" I personally love the Go-Pro's I got one for my dirtbike awesome quality and I think you can almost get 4Gb out of them these days as I have the old non HD version and its awesome.

I've had my vholdr in pissing down rain and it's water resistant but certainly not waterproof like the Go Pro. If there's any chance of it getting completely dunked I'd tend towards the Go Pro as well.

we have been using one this season with great results. Used in underwater, head mounted and railmounted. Got some cool video from dropping it in the live bait tank to watch the slimies swimming around. Great little bits of gear.

I was think of taking one of these camera's up to the swains with me and thought about trying to mount it on a pole to the centre console of the dory, or I see you can get a chest strap what have you found to be the best way to mount them for the best results. Does it take long to download to a laptop, how long does the battery last.

Its a good mates camera. He is pretty computer "savy", but says its easy to play with on the computer. We havent used the chest strap, although I would say it would work well. With the head mount you have be be sure to have a steady head and be alert as to where your head is facing (its surprising how hard it is to keep your head facing where you want with out glancing around the place).

We got some pretty cool footage of "skipper cam" while chasing billfish.

Hi guys,
I am visiting friends in South Aus and just saw some footage in recent days taken by some local marine biologist friends doing science research that used go pros (bought off Ebay). They were used for fishing research as well as some shark research showing white pointers in South Africa breaching at feed time.
Images were very good and from the hits I saw the Great Whites make (including direct hits on the camera strapped to the dummy seals) they seem fairly tuff, as the cameras survived the direct impacts.
The other research was at trawling depths of around 30 metres I think. The camers (strapped to commercial fishing gear at that depth) had great images also.

Enough to get me think about buying one for fun!.

Gents, I just bough into a group purchase of the GoPro via motorcycle forum. Price is $345 for the motorsport kit (HD hero) from an aussie distributer . If you are interested let me know. Cut off is tomorrow I believe, and sufficient numbers have paid to get the price.

Got feedback from a mate who uses the surfing one.

It's the older version (takes AAA batteries, and isn't HD), and he still recommends it as a top camera for water action.
With the new rechargable battery, and HD, it seems like a good buy, and I am thinking of getting one shortly, as I have heard they are great for spear fishing too.

The protective barrier is apparently rated to 60m deep, but I wouldn't go deeper than 5 or 6m untill someone reliable told me it was safe to do so.

The HD is pretty good - though the menu takes some getting used to . Using the on off button can be a bit fiddly .
The wide angle lense makes it great to mount high & get a great overview (fish eye)
You get around 2 hours out of the rechargeable battery pack. Filming uses around 1Gb / 12 mins ........ so a 16Gb SD card should be the minimum used.
The ideal situation is to carry a spare battery & run a 32Gb SD card ( the 32Gb card will cost up near $200 for a quality one ..... but there are cheaper ones available over the net)
