Replacing Guides

Hello everyone,

Iam replacing a guide on a brand new rod for a friend size 16 the rod and finish is perfect what is the best way to remove this guide and prep for the new one, also what is the preferred cleaning solvents used when prepping and working wih epoxy. All advice appreciated

Hi Adam I have done a few repairs and replacements of guides for friends and the easiest methods i have found is by using a sharp hobby knife and carefully cut across the top of the guide foot along the thread gently peel back thread and epoxy, I use acetone or methylated spirits and or isopropyl alcohol, very fine wet and dry sandpaper if necessary to lightly smooth any imperfections etc, seems to work for me I am sure other rod builders have their own little favourite ways cheers Darryl

Hi Fadd, I have replaced guides on several rods. The easiest way i found was to use one of those dremmel machines with a rotating sandpaper drum head. It made esy work of the expoxy and thread and allowed a space large enough to just peel the thread and expoxy off (as compared to just a knife slit). As per above only do this on top of the foot of the guide. I only use acetone when using epoxy. Iso- alcohol would also work though. Personally, I wouldn't use metho as it doesn't totally evaporate and leaves and oily residue that would then need to be cleaned up. Regards Adam

I just purchased a dremel on monday and some acetone they are a fantastic little tool to use.
