im looking at getting a new barra setup. liked the look of the daiwa steez baitcast as a reel. anyone have this reel or anyone recommend a different reel around the same price bracket that i should look at. looking to put it on a 7" rod around the 12-25lb mark. not sure on a rod either yet so any suggestions would be appreciated.

Steez reel is made from magnesium so if your fishing include saltwater , better choose other reels . However if you are using it in freshwater only , Steez is one of the best reel in existence and I am very happy with mine , a Steez 103HL .
Worth looking for saltwater alternative is Zillion in the many version , my first Zillion 100HL has been upgraded with ABEC5 Hybrid Ceramic spool bearings , it cast almost as far as the stock Steez 103HL .

yea mate it will be for freshwater use only. did you upgrade the drag in your steez? or is there no need?
Yeh like most daiwas they will need a set of carbontecs otherwisethe drag gets a bit sticky they only cost about $20 and are easy to install.
Totally agree Hairy, It amazes me for the alround quality and excellence of diawa reels (especially the steez) that they cant design a robust and smooth drag washer system. I have a zillion, and love it to bits..but until I put erskine washers in it, the drag was lumpy. So to was my HSTA 153 advantage. My standard chronarch has been silky smooth since day 1....no upgrade..though not as much drag pressure either on the flip side.

It is unfortunate that Daiwa drags are not really up to the job for our fish. Remember that these reels are mainly designed for the US market, and they don't need to worry about fish running like we do. I think the Zillion PE is standard with carbontex washers here and it has a better line laying system than the standards. I pickup up my new Z2020H yesterday and it is a very sweet reel.

agreed, stock drag is not up to a "stop em or pop em" dogfight. I have upgraded my zillion to "Lubed"carbon washers and it has smoothed it out nicely but i'd rarely use more than half of the drags capacity. I have a Zillion PE spare spool for bassing and it is a bit shallower spool. the stock zillion spool will only hold about 90m of 50lb braid so be aware of that when considering the shallower version. That said, the last trip may be the last time I used the 50lb as I've noticed the shortcomings of the heavier line....casting distance.... the PE spool has a really good braking system for long casts and so the Bassing spool may be getting a run on the next barra excursion. I hope the 20lb whiplash has enough grunt tho'...

Don't want to hijack this, but Roo, I'm using 20 and 30lb Sunline Super PE on most of my reels now. I'm liking it.

have been reading up on the steez and would prob rather a zillion. more drag and spool capacity with the zillion. now to figure out which one i want. the hyper long cast looks the goods but dont know if the extra 1 bearing and 40 grams less warrants the extra $200 in price. the PE also looks good with 5 extra bearings im guessing it would be smooth as silk. and 20 grams less in weight. will be spooling it up with either 30lb nitlon or 30lb sunline super PE. mainly throwing hard bodied lures. any suggestions as to which zillion to get? does the stock zillion with upgraded drag cut the mustard?

I've got all the Zillions, from the 4.9:1 Crazy Cranker to the 7.3:1 50th Anniversary. I'm not a huge fan of the 7:1 and above ratio for Barra and the 4.9:1 is too slow for flowing water. The PE is the best of them. It has a good drag as standard. It has a faster level wind which is better for braid. It looks good too. Mine has Super PE and I've never had a problem with line capacity. The standard Zillion 6.3:1 will do what you want, just not as well as the PE.

Theres a bloke on here, who's unavailable for comment at the moment, who rates the HLC Zillion his best reel...more than a steez he has. Reckons the extra cash is well spent. I was skeptical that it could be better than a steez, but I have had a cast of it, and it really is sweet....head and shoulders better than standard zillions anyway.

cheers guys. leaning towards the hlc. now to find a good 7" rod to match it with. i have a loomis 6"3 i use with my curado but lookin to get a bit more casting distance with the 7".
