    GC in close 29/06

    Hi all,

just a quick account of yesterday's trip out from the seaway. Had 4 POB and headed out of the seaway on route for marks around the 27 fathom grounds at around 6.30am. Dropped on a show around the 20 fathoms which gave up a maori cod first drop. Was a plague of undersize tailor (33cm was largest) and yakkas so moved on shortly after. Stopped on another show at 24s, this spot gave up the two tuskies and a couple of squire. I was fishing 5inch gulps and apart from dropping one good sized snap i could not get a touch. The bite ran out here so we then moved out to our origanl destination on the 27s. Ended up with our bag of trag from this spot and one pearly. Once I saw the trag were on i put out an octo jig to dead stick while I fished bait, had to catch something on the trip .
Octo jig wasnt touched although i have caught plenty of trag on them before. Baits used were squid, pillies and small green prawns. Trag bit on the squid to start with but then went off it. I switched to prawn and squid cocktail, was getting double headers but on the prawn only it seemed as i didnt change a squid bait for about 10 fish? From memory i think the squire took squid baits as well.

great conditions, little run to the south west and a few whales to top it off.

Sounds like a good day out.
Nice to know the trag are in closer now as they taste really good when fresh and means you dont need to go far out to get them. Also a sign that the cold water has finally arrived and the snapper should follow soon.

How big and what colour was the Octo jig you used? I have them up to 250gm but find the smaller ones work better on the trag and snapper 100-150gm.
    Cheers

yeah i enjoy a feed of trag as much as the other species that you get out there. it was a 50g white with lumo head. stayed on the bottom no problem. have found the purple one worked best in the past, kinda like that car colour you see occasionally that changes colours but they were sold out. i was thinking of using a heavier one on the bottom of a paternoster rig to repalce the snapper lead for something different... what do you think

    Hey Two Dogs
Yep I've read about it in articles in the NAFA Magazine.
I purchased a load of lucanus/octo jigs when I was in Singapore last year (about AU$6 each) and only had success with the smaller ones (100-150gm) in August off Goldie for Snapper. The snapper go on the feed sometimes and hit anything so not sure what that proves.
I do have a couple of purple Octos of 250gm but the hook is about a 10/0 - a bit big for my liking as I rarely go above 7/0 for snapper. THe 250gm bottom weight should work well though and I saw a recent TV show (ifish - I think) that showed a lucanus on the bottom and a paternostered gulp hanging off it about 1m above. The gulp seemed to be getting the most hits though.
Should be worth trying anyway and if a Kingie would like to taste my Octojig it would also be great fun!
    Cheers
