    Pine River lizards

Chased some lizards around the bridges at the mouth of the Pine today using SP's and some live bait. The live bait came out on top accounting for 5 fish while one one took a SP (a prawn pattern) despite trying a range of different types. Kept 3 (49, 50 and 59 cm) and released the other three plus a bream and a small tailor. Conditions close to perfect - nice morning!

Thanks for the report Freeeedom, I'll be heading down there myself later this week. Can I ask what did you use for live bait mate?

    Re: Pine River lizards

Went looking for herring and small poddy mullet Mike, but could only find a few of the golden coloured herring-like fish that Grant calls Hamilton's anchovy and a couple of small bony bream. The flathead like them but the anchovy don't survive very long as a live bait. Didn't get a single herring and the mullet I got were a bit big for live baits. Might have to work a bit harder next time but getting soaking wet from the cast net early on a winters morning is not the most sensible way to start the day - might have to start wearing a rain coat - but I'll make sure it's not yellow!

No Greg I went up the river to a spot that is usually very reliable for live bait. It's usual to get the small poddy mullet in fairly shallow water.
Quite often there are large schools of herring around the Hornibrook and Houghton Highway pylons. If you cruise along beside the bridges you can spot them on the sounder and get enough live bait for the day in just one cast but I couldn't find any on Monday

    Freeeedom,

Thanks for the report, I'm heading out with the in-laws today - probably try for diver whiting off Redcliffe, but maybe have a try at the mouth on the way out since the flathead reports have been pretty good.

    Thanks again,

    Dave.

A very nice feed and a great day by the sound of it freedom. I have found the live bait a lot harder to find during the winter months.

Were you drifting or anchored up? I find the drift on an out going tide a lot more productive in the area.

Didn't see you go past today Dave. I was there again today despite the rain. Thankfully with the new bridge there's plenty of shelter when the showers come through. Today I got a bit more live bait which lasted until about noon and I released what I hadn't used. Took 8 lizards today of which 5 were legal. Best couple were about 50cm.

I anchor and work an area over for a while casting to the side and let the tide move the livies across a fair bit of bottom as they come in line behind the boat. I let them sit for about ten minutes and then bring them in and check their condition and put them out again. If I get a fish I'll keep working the area for a while, but if I don't get anything after about 40 minutes I'll raise the pick and move a bit to try some new ground. Works for me

You did well again! We must have just missed you, we headed out at about 2pm and managed 3 flatties, a bream and a couple of crabs.
