A great day, 9 Fish and a..... MARLIN!!

Left Manly at 5 for the Yalta mini meet and greet, arranged to meet Honda 900 at the marina and then after a scoot across the bay, Jase (The Lump) at the south passage bar.

This was to be my 1st bar crossing since my course, and as usual I was pumped in eagerness to tackle the bar, wanting everything to go smoothly. Following Honda out, only one wave looked bigger than anything else we encountered for the day, but it was more like a swell than a wave on the outer bank of the north channel, and once through there, it was a case of adjust trim out a little, and go catch Honda in his Yalta 555.

Not knowing where the bait grounds were previously, soon it became quite obvious - a small group of boats, our arranged rendez vous with The Lump, and it included Master Bill Corten with his boat full of guys, all jiging for livies.

Don't know how you did it Chris, your live bait Jig was already prepared and in the drink quick as a flash, I can never do that, leaving the bait jig in the packet until required, those hooks jump out and grab anything that moves .... skin, jumpers, caps, boat aphoulstry, other rods.... but we eventually caught a few, but not B4 Chris and Jase had already moved off and said, we'll catch up with you at the 1st Mark we gave you.

Getting there was no problem at all, catching fish as usual seemed a little more challenging than all the reputation this place had in comparison.. But we caught a couple, both Brad ( For Steve) and I hooked onto big fish - but got bricked in not too embarrassing fashion, we thought we were winning the fight, but then the all too familiar "Pop" as the leader broke.

While Chris and Jase were fishing the 1st few marks they gave me ( thanks again guys) I noticed another mark not too far away and decided to sneak off away from the others to try it. Good decision!! Double hookups, and one dropped, but it was suddenly game on. A snap, a pearly, a parrot then Brad hooks onto something quite a bit bigger that was slogging it out down deep. The line went slack, he thought he lost it, then came tight again, but with some surface splashing. We both said in unison WTF is that? Then almost as if answering our question a Marlin jumped out of the water, only 15 - 20 meters away, a deep fluro blue colour, I will never forget the beauty of these fish, I have a freeze frame in my memory now forever. Then once the Marlin had rolled over on his side, it was almost a "wink" at us as if to say, catch ya later boys!! zzzzzzzZZZZZZZZ snap and it was all over! Brad and I just looked at each other in silence for a few seconds, what an awesome display!

The question we will have for a long time is was the Marlin hooked from the beginning, or did he come up and grab whatever Brad was hooked up on half way through?? We will never know.

Thanks again Honda900 and The Lump for helping me out, and the preparation for the trip

    Scalem

Great work Scalem. Seeing a little black break the surface is amazing. We had one hooked on a knife jig. ----> Yep I'm on ....no I'm not....Yep on again - then it breaks the surface and gone in a matter of seconds.

    Cheers,
    Wags

    Brian,

we have a bait rod rigged and ready to go, placement on the boat is critical, cant have it near anything at all. Its all in the preparation.

We wound up with 5 fish for the day, 3 snaps around the same size as Brad has on display, a pearly and a Tuskie. Seemed that the SP's did well early and fell off later in the day. We got dusted on a livie on 50lb braid and had a bit of fun with a shark.

Just be careful on that outer bank, be prepared to get over a wave if you have to, just after the the bottom of the tide, they can stand up there out of nowhere.

Nothing like a confidence boost to get out there and do it after you have done Bill's course, when I did mine I was out there the very next day to re-enforce what he had taught me.

Anyway nice to put some faces to names.

ps, Adam_G got some really good action shots of your boat, sure he will be happy to send them or post to you. Actually nice to see how the hull sits in the water when we were side by side.

    Regards
    HOnda.

    Brian,
Try having some PVC, about 6ft in length, set up in the boat vertically. Put a screw in the top with it only just penetrating through the pipe. You can then drop your bait jig down with the sinker on and put the top eye of the jig over the screw. You will now have jigs stored away ready to use. Works a treat. Just have to remember to flush down the tube with fresh water when you get home.

    Cheers
    Scott.

Nice to put some faces to names today. Team Scalem definately came out on top yeaterday but it was just good to get out (it's been over 2 months for us).

Brian & Brad, what plastics were you using? I normally fish plastics while Honda sticks to bait, I got 2 squire early then dropped the next 6 (need more pracitice , the Lump was next to us when I dropped no. 5), for me I've found a pattern begining that the SP go well early then after about 9am I can't get a touch and the bait seems to go better.

was using a range of Gulps mainly 7 inch and varying the jig head 1oz to 3/4oz.

I got some pics of your Yalta flying along, I'll put up a couple but pm me your email and I will send them to you.

Sounds like you bloke's had a batter day than myself and Matt (MattChew)

We got bugger all at Mud, i think it was two 10cm squire, a tiny leatherjacket, 2 big pike, a few grinners and i almost hooked a comorant.

We then headed into the river and fished a few marks for one little 20cm threadfin or putty nose perch.

Brian if you wanna get into some live bait fishing buy a sabiki jig rod and then the bait jigs wind into the hollow blank so they never get caught up on stuff, i think there pretty cheap too.

    cheers tim

Scott is on the money. I picked up that tip off ausfish a few years ago. Always have a bait jib rigged up and ready to go stored in a piece of PVC tube. Cut a slice in each end for the sinker and the swivel and no more tangles. Jeremy

Adam, I would have to agree. We did everything the same as you, Gulp 7" were the go, this particular morning they seemed to favour the Nuke chook over pink shine - they are the two colours I mostly fish with, only because I know either work, and I have to stop buying all other colours that I really don't have as much faith in.

The few livies we had kicked around in the bait tank for a while, but as mine is not plumbed and a couple of livies started to croak it, I took the dying livie out, a quick despatch and fillet had me sending down half a fillet ( a qtr of the fish) down on a ...... Jig Head. Yeah, I told you that already when you pulled alongside, Chris called it "cheating" but whatever you call it, it worked REALLY well.

Thanks for your photography Adam, some good shots there of my baby!

Good day out. Shame I don't get Saturdays off anymore as it looked to be the best choice of days to head out this weekend. I came close to heading out today but didn't get there. Never mind. Well done bro.

Nice work Brian. You definately won the day. We only ended up with 1 x squire 1 x Maori Cod and 1 x Parrot. We went wide after a while to no avail. Should have stuck it out in where we were a bit longer. Good to catch up.

Great shots Adam. You can even see 2 very attractive men in the Yalta with the navy blue stripe.
