Few tailor at Mud today (Friday 25th)

Ran across to Mud this morning from Clontarf arriving about 7.30 am. There was a bit of a chop from the south-west breeze but a managebale trip. Trolled metal spoons around for a couple of hours managing to boat 5 tailor, all legal, best about 42cm. No great bite, just the odd fish every now and again. About 9.00 the wind got up a bit from the south-east so I moved in close for a bit of shelter and berleyed up a few bream. Took 6 keepers (not great quality - best about 32cm) and one legal squire. Had a quick troll before leaving as the wind had dropped off a bit and got another 2 tailor. Good run back across the bay. Nothing spectacular but an enjoyable morning just the same

Nice catch there mate, would you mind if i asked how you set up your spoons? Are they on a downrigger? sinker? and what size spoons do you recommend? do you have trouble with line twist? any help appreciated.

    thanks

Well done Freeeedom (John). Still nice to see tailor and bream caught, I had a thought that metal lures would be the go for tailor.

How deep were you trolling the lures?

    Cheers, Peter

Re: Few tailor at Mud today (Friday 25th)

Bay dog and Bondy99 - I'm using reasonably small spoons, around the 20gm size around Mud (I use heavier ones in the surf for distance) mostly patterns such as Snipers, Tobys, Maniacs, Raiders etc. A short wire trace gives a bit of insurance but is not really needed. I put the unweighted lures about 30m behind the boat and they run just below the surface. Line twist is not normally a problem if the swivel is working properly but can be horrendous if the swivel gets jammed. If that happens remove the lure and let most of the line out behind the boat for a few minutes to remove all the twists, then start again. Theres a bit of loose weed around Mud at the moment which often catches on the lure and brings it to the surface, so keep an eye out for that. You'll also catch the odd large grinner on these lures at times too which leads to brief excitement followed by disappointment. Also watch out for crab pot lines when you're trolling!
