Pancake Creek early July
Hi all,
Im off to Pancake Creek next month with the boys after missing the trip the last few years because Ive been OS. They usually go around Sept but have decided to go earlier this year because of work commitments and a few babies on the way. We are planning to do a bit around the headlands/middle/outer etc and a bit up the creeks. What sort of action can we expect around the inshore reefs this time of year? We are hoping to raise a few quality reefies.
Also some talk of trying to get through to Jenny Lind from the pancake side. Any advice about this mission? Or is it easier to just go around the point and through the front? Is it worth it? (FYI; 4.6mtr C/C and a back up tinny.)
Whats this Jansons Ive read about?
Any help is appreciated. Cheers

Re: Pancake Creek early July
The main species around the rocks is wire netting cod. We have caught good nannygai on the reef that runs out from Janson's Rock on the north side of the creek. A few snapper here and there and cod etc. Old days there were more RTE and trout in the area. With a bit of sea you will see Janson's Rock break. You should find it easy enough and all the reef around it pretty easy just off the sand bank on the north side of Pancake. You will have to check all your yellow and green zones in that neck of the woods these days.
You can get into Jenny Lind on only the highest tides from Chinaman Ck. To get two high tides at the right time to let you get in there and out again on the same day will be rare. I have gone in there in my 12' barra boat and fished all day, parked it up and walked back to camp for lunch and low tide then had to wait for an evening high tide to get back out again. The gutter from Chinaman into Jenny Lind is a bit of a walk your tinny in, walk your tinny out proposition. The 4.6m will probably be too big.

Thanks Smithy!
Some good info there. We would definately like to get back into some trout. We used to troll them up around the Coral patches near the designated anchorage back in the day. 4" Lively lures Mad Mullet Deep was the pic of lure.
Ive seen a heap of bait shoaling up between Clew Point and Rodds. Sought of near where you describe Jansons to be. Does the reef run north from there does it?
I figured the Chinamen/Jenny Lind run would be a bit tricky. We are used to working the tides to access little creeks and that up North but I dont think they will line up for us when we are there. Its only an option for a rough day out the front in any case.
Some of the boys are big into there Popper fishing and are taking the Saltigas. I cant imagine there will be alot of GTs around at the moment. Just the odd big fella rather than heaps of 10-15kg fish like we have experienced there in the past. What do you reckon?
Thanks again, Longone

Re: Pancake Creek early July
Jansons is just over the sandbar. Not far at all. Certainly not back toward Elelphent Rocks/Ethel Rocks etc. The reef runs to the east from there. The old line up was the two lighthouse line-up for the reef. Get Bustard head over Clews Pt light and start working east and west of there.
The rocks and headlands would certainly be worth a popper fish. You wouldn't know what you might get.

Re: Pancake Creek early July
Cheers Smithy,
We usually set up camp right on Clews Point and anchor the boat in the bay next to it. You wouldnt happen to know which camping area that is part of so I can organise the right permit. The website lists several in the area but the two they claim are only accessible by boat (like Clews Point) are;
Rodds Peninsula and Bustard Head Camping area or
Bustard Heads camping area
Ive spoken to the EPA and National Parks but they havent been able to help.
Thanks again, Longone
