    Bream Hook Size?!?

    Hey Guys,

Im just curious to see what everyones favourite size/brand/style of hook they use.

Personally i have slowly decreased my hook size over the years ive been fishing but just want to know what other people use and what works best for them!

    Thanks!

When Bream fishing (bait) was my main focus the only hook I used was a Mustad 540 French in 2/0,no reason in particular it just seemed to be the hook of choice during that time around here (mid 70's to mid 80's Nth NSW).

Try the Black Magic range of hook's The best I've found so far is the B.M.KS1 in 2/0. Most of the bream that take these are gut hooked. Their profile is like the Mustad Eagle claw Range. The edge on these hooks are Chem sharpened with a super fine conicle tip. Penetration on strike ......Not a Problem. And by the look's of things the hook must be easy to swallow .

Great for Cut baits to live small baits.

mustad 92247 pattern. size 1 or 1/o. If I am specifically fishing for bream these are the ones i use. Not a chemically sharpened hook, but sharp out of the box...straight eye...slightly longer shank..'suicide' style gape and point, bait slices on shank. Compatible with a wide variety of baits, not expensive, and a decent hook up rate....not that many gut hookups (a plus in my opinion....makes it easier to release smaller fish). Been using this pattern for the last 40 years (have tried many others...and there are a few that have very specific advantages in certain situations), but this is the one I have found is a 'must have' for general bream fishing. 540's are a good general pattern...but I find them too thick and not consistent in sharpness out of the box...plus i dont like down turned eyes.

Greg that's the only flaw with the hook that I've mentioned. Because it can be an arse when you have to cut the smaller fish loose. Good point on gut hook up's.
I'll try some of the hook's you've pointed out , and see what fairs up.

    cheers Gav.

    Re: Bream Hook Size?!?

no worries Gav. Dont try ganging them, they dont work very well. Stick to a 4200 pattern for that...two 1/0's for small white bait or a pillie fillet. But they work great with prawns...live or dead, yabbies, cut baits (mullet strips, squid strips etc), and mullet, chicken or nigger gut. Live prawns I would probably prefer a wide gape hook (cant remember the pattern)....but like I said there are certain situations where other patterns are preferable. I find that if you are getting a lot of gut hookups..go up a size or two. If you dont get any takers on the bigger hooks....its probably because there arent any bigger fish around. Bream are a schooling fish....and the pattern will be that the majority of the school will be a similar size....with usually an accompanying smaller school of bigger fish just on the fringes...which will not be attracted to the bait that the smaller ones will.

    Re: Bream Hook Size?!?

I fish for Bream all the time during the winter, from a boat anchored very close to the wash, in the ocean, I use cheap Mustad french hooks as well, in size 1 or 1/0 if the tackle store does not have the 1's, never had any problems with any size Bream, and also any bi catch that may happen along, I once got a 6KG Snapper in 2 metres of water on a small reel and 3KG line, now that was exciting for a while, only ever use peeled Royal Red prawns for bait, catch pnety of Trevaly and stuff as well.
