hey guys looking to put together a new set up for chasing tuna on sp using heavy braid but also use the second spool with 10lb braid for sp snapper in and outside the bay.

at the moment i am leading towards the triforce 400 as it has a larger line capacity although im still not 100% convinced. i am looking at the $170-$300 price bracket so any other suggestions on what reel to get would also be appreciated.

If your using just plastics then either will do the job....but of the 2 options you've listed I'd pick the Stradic as the better reel. not sure of the retrieve ratios but check how much line you get back per rotation of the handle, nothing worse than having fish keen on fast metals and you can't wind fast enough. I have used a 4000 Shimano Symetre(6.0:1 ratio) for metals and it works just as well jigging plastics on the reef but a similar sized reel with only 4.7:1 ratio just couldn't wind fast enough to keep their interest.

mate you just saved me some coin, ive also got a 4000 symetre on a 5-8kg raider but i didnt think it had good enough line capacity for good tuna. so you have had no problem with the line capacity when on a decent tuna, because if you havnt i may aswell stick with that.

I've only got a few 4-5kg rats + I'm running 10lb Fins braid so I've got 300m on the spool + a little backing. the 10lb fins breaks at more like 20lb, never had a problem with it but not had any XL denizens of the deep on there either. Spare spool has 20lb Platil millennium braid but would be no more than 200m on there. As for saving your coin....I dont think either would do a better job than the old Symetre...but if you are going chasing XL fish then you should probably up the coin a bit. For the XL's I have a 3500HD Certate, a 4000 Certate would be better for a little more line capacity if using 40lb braid.... I use 30lb whiplash and fitted a full 300yds(274m) on it. I haven't had this onto any tuna yet as its main purpose is for impoundment barra....and it works very well for that. Dunno if the drag or the gears in the Triforce would have a very long service life if you hook into something large and fast.....that said, the 5000 Stradic might not be too happy either. All depends on how big you wanna go. I'd say your existing kit would fine for fish up to 10 or 12kg....after that, some accelerated wear and tear will soon see it fail. Drags would be failing if not tuned up and then the gears would be next to go. thats if the bail arm survives.

yer thanks roo, the plan for the tuna was going to be upto that 12kg marks, i dont think ile be able to tease anything bigger and if i do its just one of those things. thanks for all your suggestions and help

No worries Troy, I take the heavy gear with me if I'm going outside but usually use lighter stuff on the shallow reefs off tweed(0-30m depths). By lighter stuff i mean 4kg range, basically flathead gear. If I get smoked then so be it...and change guns! your existing stuff should do fine. One day you'll get smoked by something you cant stop, it happens, but mostly the lighter approach will get you more bites.
