Thread: Barra Stats

    Barra Stats

I know Kyle and I are impoundment barra tragics and this thread will verify it!

What we want to know is does anyone have a good excel spreadsheet that they use for barra statistics? We're after one that sets out date, size, location, lure used, water depth & temp, method used and any other comments.

To add to this we would like to see moon phase/position, barometric pressure, dam level and total stats per angler of barra caught, average size and total length overall.

Happy to design my own but I thought 'why re-invent the wheel' if someone else already has one?...

    Anybody?

Good one Pete/Kyle ...... hope that you find what you are after and i'm pretty sure that someone will have something to use or adapt.

Fishing diaries are something that I've toyed with back in my ultra keen days - particularly when I targeted jewfish ......... certain parameters were common on each successful trip - particularly moon , tide , time of day ... certainly my fishing improved significantly once I got these sorted out.

Strangely - when it came to impoundment barra ..... It hasn't been a priority to document the nuances of each capture or non capture - Maybe it's because we have a captured target species in an enclosed environment. Additionally because the trips are usually organised in advance - we go and we have to deal with the cards dealt .......... and so our powers of observation are key.

maybe I'm too lazy too ....... It will be interesting to hear what others feel about record keeping .... Is not keeping a concise record holding me / us back What information has been learned specifically from records that you would not have picked up on?

Sorry Pete - not trying to hijack your thread ....... I think you have a good topic here

    Re: Barra Stats

No dramas Chris - as discussed our record keeping has a threefold purpose:

    1. To track our 'internal' barra competition (Kyle is leading!)...
    2. To keep an historical record for personal memories
    3. To log similar conditions over time to remind us of which areas worked in what conditions...

Number three is the barra 'diary' but is more about not forgetting what worked well in the past in regards to lure/techniques etc as well as locations in varying fishing conditions and times of year...

Best thing about going barra fishing - fillin' that diary!

Use 3 programs... good old Microsoft Word 07' - every detail I can pick up on when I'm out there go's into description for each session. Also use Excel for spreadsheets & tables/graphs, though words are better then numbers in the barra game.

Have also started using ArcView (GIS Software) which I'm getting a little better with - previously used Aussie Explorer. If ya got yourself a good handheld GPS and the right software, you can really nut out a Dam.

    Re: Barra Stats

    Hey Pete.

Mate my old man is one of a few that works in with the Inland fisheries commision in Tas. Each capture has its own evelope with time lure weather, size, sex, gut content, plus scale sample that is all sent in for their records as well as his own.

I followed suit for a while and went with a card system, each fish had its own and was documented put in one of those file type containers with the year and date on top for easy access for late perusing. The cards are handy because they fit in the tackle box without much area lost.

I dont do it at all these days, but I do put pen to paper in a dairy each trip just as a rough record, funny but I found with Barra I can not forget alot of the variables and not to mention I dont get to fish for em on a consistant basis so as the are landed the memories of the capture is pretty well locked in.

Anyhow mate good on ya's hope you sort it

    Re: Barra Stats

So... how many people do keep thorough barra diaries or notes?

Chris & Nath - so, your both trying to say you don't keep good written notes of your fishing or...? Believe a good memory is valuable on & off the water - agree with you both there. You can compare every factor of your fishing before & after trips with good recording, day by day, month by month, year by year. If your just relying on good memory of whats happened in the past to maybe point you in the right direction, isn't that a bit loose?

So, why NOT keep a barra diary/records? A quick 5/10min entry into the computer after every session isn't too hard to ask, surely? Guess it's a personal thing, but at the same time you only get out what you put in. Perhaps you spend 60mins a week typing posts on this forum, when you could be updating your barra records and learning something new!

Pete - I'd be a little suprised if someone was to provide you/all of us with their personal format of recording here on the www. Sure, they arn't giving you 'info' of such... but recording idea's could be as valuable as giving you their best triggering technique or lure modification. Make ya' own and see how ya go! It took me a good 8/9 months to be happy with the stuff I was recording & the format I was using, but havn't looked back since. An average recording entry after a session out the lake might take me 2/3mins these days - easy peasy asianeasy.

Don't mean to hi-jack, good thread.

One of those things Theo ........ I've never been a good record keeper
really unsure of how much I will get out of it ...... when only doing maybe 10 trips a year -
as you mentioned you only get out of it , what you put into it ....... + the quality and amount of input .
So with the limited number of trips that I do ........ I'm a bit like Nath - can remember what the conditions were like when I caught fish or where I caught fish. ( but I couldn't tell you say moon phases)
but having said that - I usually have reasonable photo records too , which means I could fill in those pieces.

Anyhow ....... I'm certainly not saying that it may not be useful

    Re: Barra Stats

Yeah hey Theo, mate I do keep a diary but just not the full on card system of days past... I just quickly jot down date time of day temp and lure but nothing like the evry bit of detail like I used too. Just dont fish enough to warrant it, maily as I said I can remember most trip because there are only a handful each year.

But next year maybe better!!!!!!! well here's hoping anyway.
