Need some advice on plastics rigs.

ive just started getting into fishing with SP's and ive just bought a Samaki Zing 6"10 4 - 8lb rod, and was wondering if anyone could recommend a reel and braid/leader (brand, sizes etc.) just for fishing esturies.

    Thanks.

dude, reel size i would run would be a 2000-2500 size reel. comes down to how much you wanna spend on a reel. theres so much to choose from.... daiwa, shimano etc. berkley fireline braid would be suffice in 4-8lb and 6-12lb flurocarbon leader is ideal for fishing soft plastics. that there would be ideal for bream, flatties to small palegics.
(when Im dead) my biggest FEAR is that my wife will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it.........

mate im kinda new to this but the more you get out there and give it a go the better you get. i started off with a 6" rod and a 2000 daiwa reel cost me about $400 all up and i havent looked back. ebay sells the sp's very cheap if you buy in bulk. i payed $120 and if i went to the shops i probally would had spent $4-500 for it. i wont have to buy any gulps for the next decade.

One thing that I like to keep in mind is that the lighter you fish, the more success you will have.
Fish can be very timid at times.
Keeping a light leader (6lb) and light mainline (4lb) you will have so much more success on bream and flathead.
This setup will still allow you to catch large fish. I fish with this exact line setup in the Brisbane River and have caught Jew at 82cm on this setup.
Let the drag do its job and don't rush the fish to the boat.
    Lighter the better.

This of course is only my opinion, others may tell you differently.

    jason,
do you lose many fish when you fish that light? and is that braid or mono? im always getting told go lighter but i worry i will lose too many good size fish. im still new to this and try to soak as much as i can with a number of opinions.

    Aaron,

YES, at times you do loose fish......but......you catch more to make up for it.
At the end of the day fishing is a sport....otherwise they would call it catching.
I fish fireline 4lb braid as my mainline and 6lb Berkley Vanish as my fluro leader.

I think the biggest thing is to make sure that drag is set up correctly. Even use a set of scales to set them with slightly heavier line if desired.
I choose to have my drag a little less pressure than normal when fishing plastics, just to ensure that they don't bust me off.

At the end of the day, I have caught a lot more fish since fishing ultra light from the days when I went out to skull drag the fish to the side of the boat.
The rewards are greater in catch numbers and general sport fishing.

    Hope this helps

    Aaron,

for a 2000 size reel, you will need to throw some mono on for backing to fill the spool.
100 yards of braid will not fill your spool.
Just throw a small amount of mono straight onto the spool first then topload your braid.

Maybe invest in a 1000 in time after you get the hang of it.
the smaller reel will be easier to use with the lighter line.

Allround angler at Caboolture have a good price on a Shimano Slade 1000. $39 CASH PRICE. Might be worth the money.
Grab yurself a 2-3kg rod and your away.

Re: Need some advice on plastics rigs.

hmm interesting i am getting into soft plastics but i use 8lb line mono. I have never used braid and dont really know if i should try it. I am using my baitcaster a crestfire about 4 years old. I just filled it up with 8lb maxima. but i wonder if i should chuck it on another reel and try some 6lb braid ?. I run 8lb as im scared of loosing decent fish. and i normaly run a 15lb leader.

Having never used braid before the trusty ol baitcaster tangles you sometimes get do they get hectic with braid? as i have heard it tangles very easy.

reel is crestfire rh-2008 rod is some thing that came with it. 5"6 light line 4 - 8lb 7- 10gram lure weight. I have other spinning rods but thought i would use this mainly for plastics as its good to use.
