    Alvey Combo For Tailor

I'm looking to hook up on some tailor this season after some embarrassing luck last year (don't even ask.)

Anyway, I'm looking for a new combo, hopefully and Alvey. There's an Alvey 650B combo at BCF for $135 which I'm looking into, will that do the job?

    Cheers,

That will get you started fine then you can look for a better rod that suits the style of fishing you are doing ie. casting weights etc

The deal at BCF for the 650B is a combo, with what I think is a 3.9m Alvey rod. I reckon I'll mainly be casting bait for the Tailor, but I'll still use metals every now and then.

it will do just fine....you dont need a high speed retrieve with slugs for tailor. and its surprising just how fast the retrieve is on an alvey....remember its not about the gear ratio (Alvey is 1:1) but how much line is retrieved per turn on the handle. Dont be a tackle snob...if your fishing the beaches/rocks for tailor an Alvey is a no nonsense, low maintenance low cost weapon of choice by MANY who target Tailor specifically. I have NEVER taken a threadline reel anywhere near the beach (ocean beach that is) or rocks for tailor fishing. I couldnt be bothered stripping the buggers down after each outing to clean out the sand and salt.

    Sounds pretty good.

I'd be looking at spooling up with Platypus Platinum line which is a good quality line and is one of the thinnest you can get for a nominated b/s.

Even better, you could get Platypus Super 100 which is even a bit thinner than the Platinum.

Some Gamakatsu Gangster hooks and you're in business!

    That combo would be ideal.
It is Chinese made but Alvey would have had some input in the design etc.
Had a look at them the other week when I was there, not bad for the coin they are asking.
