Thread: Alvey & lures + line guide.

Alvey & lures + line guide.

I have a couple of questions that I'f like to ask.

I got given an Alvey 500 and surf rod by a mate - only thing is I think he got miss-sold a bit as the rod doesn't have the little hook for the line to sit in between the reel and the 1st eye. Can this be added easily with a bit of effort or better to go for another rod?

I'd like to use the reel on a smaller rod and start using lures - sp's, poppers etc. Any advice on if the side casters are able to do this? Advice on set up?

    Thanks

any reel is suitable for lures, you could even use a hand line if you wanted to, some are just better/easier, I guess anything can be added to the rod if you really wanted to.

Gav, are you talking about the Alvey open runner? If you are, I didn't think they were a pre-requisite on surf rods. Yep, they help greatly I think. I have them on all the rods I use Alveys on.

They are available at Mossops and I am sure other good tackle shops that sell rod equipment.

Don't worry about the hooky dodad.
Not worth the trouble in putting it on.

Nope, not really. Just a matter of getting a roll of thread similar colour to the rod's bindings.
Yeah, it's a matter of choice to use them or not. I find myself using them less and less these days when I do fish.

maybe the rod isn't one of those suited for the alvey? may or may not be a problem if it is a rod meant for a spinning reel.
I regularly throw slugs with an alvey and find the line keeper handy at keeping the line on the spool while retrieving. Nothing worse than having a fish on and looking down to see the line wrapped around the handles, ha
