Herring

I've been fishing a bridge near home in mermaid waters quite a lot lately and ive been cast netting live herring to use as bait.

I've always caught a few trevally when I've been except for this morning.

Yesterday when I went there were herring everywhere and i was cast netting them easily, however this morning i went and i couldnt see them anywhere, let alone catch them.

I always go just after sunrise and fish for a couple of hours.

my question is, where do they all go? do they swim off as a massive school or do they usually hang around the same place?

Tide often pushes them from one side of a bridge/jetty to another.

yeah i was casting on both sides but it still didnt make any difference

A decent change in water temp/salinity will cause them to move also.

At this time off year the herring usually dissapear out of the canals and the trevally will follow.Not sure where they gobut they won't be back till it starts to warm up again.

are there any other canal fish in winter besides bream and maybe tailor?

I too live in Mermaid Waters, I have also been getting a few trevs latley, tossing a 40 gram raider has been working, usually in the morning around 7 to 9 o'clock.

Cast netting for some bait a couple of weeks ago but nothing was around so I thought i would try the lure, got a 40cm trev after about 10 mins which was a bit of a surprise as there was no sign of them around apart from a few black shags.

On another topic is it spawning time for mullet?, the canal is thick with them at the moment, slowly swimming around on the surface.

I dont know anything about mullet spawning but ive definately noticed an increase in numbers.

Around the bank near the bridge i fish at there are hundreds and hundreds of mullet.

from when i was younger i remember herring was warmer months then i use to load up the herring jig with bread and catch mullet. mighty fun pulling in 2/3 at a time. I am still getting herring though at night of the local jettis.

I got a few herring with the cast net yesterday, nothing in the shallows had to throw of the jetty into the deeper water to get them.

Try berleying up with bread before throwing the net. I pretty much always do it that way, and you get tonnes more. I've found a massive decrease in all the bait lately too. Unless I can locate a school of mullet, there is nothing around here.
