I use to live up there and found the fishing to be pretty good all year round, in the colder months you just have to change tactic a bit, chase the barra in the real deep holes, this is when a deep diving minnow can out fish live bait. If you are going up in November, remember the closed season applies in the gulf as well, but this is about as perfect a time as you can get, it's going to be real hot, very humid, and the fishing will be about as good as it gets. I found chasing the neaps did the best for me, if you get a chance to get south of Arukun, into the Love or Kirke, you will have a ball on barra, I remember a few years back on the Kirke, where I caught 160 barra in 3 days, there was 4 of us fishing and the numbers were huge. Personally I would opt for November, knowing about the closed season, and just have a ball catching fish, the salmon and jacks will still be available. Hope you have a great trip.

In July the queenies will be running pretty thick and fast, and big. The barra will be a little slow, but they still get some. November would be good for barra, just can't keep any.

November looks like being winner at this stage,Mouse do you know if you can fish in the aurukun area off your own bat I would love to take my own boat up there maybe the following year and camp somewhere? You hear alot about fishing in weipa and bamaga area but not much about aurukun cheers Yamp

Mate i'm pretty sure the rivers to the south of Aurukun are closed, to camping anyway, you might be right if you stay on board your boat, other than that you can try false Pera Head to the north, there is camping allowed at this site, if you have your own boat, there is some really good reef patches nearby, and it is just a short jump up to the Hay river, which can be a little daunting but does fish well

Go November, have been twice that time of year and it is great. I haven't fished with Steve, but understand he is guiding up there now http://www.hyperspacesportfishing.com/

Warmer weather is def best for north QLD.I personally think April-june is by far the best. As the water is still warm from summer, but not too hot.Ive tried october before and it was no where near as good. Late november should see the start of warmer water and fish starting to fire.
