As I've said before, a couple of my brothers clients drag their light planes arround with dirty old coxes......admittedly a single engined plane will be a bit lighter than a decent sized boat or caravan.
But the hydrostatic drive in some of the later mowers should manage it particularly in low gear on the flat.
Those big old walk behind slashers were a piece of work......I recon that would be worth poking with a stick.
Another thaught has just come to me.
Rotary cultivators or chain diggers.....often the same machine with a different impliment.
Now they have a decent amount of pull and some weight along with it.
After the cultrual revolution, the cheineese built thousands or rotary cultivators and thay used them as a mechanical replacement for the ox or donkey.....
I've seen pictures and video of em towing huge trailers with the things.
cheers
Its the details, those little details, that make the difference.
Axel weight on mowers may be a issue as they aren't built super tough these days and on a slope and over bumps a lot more than ball weight can happen. I know some of teh mower trailer hitches say tiny weights to tow and only certain slopes as well.
Only one way to see if it will work - try it
Old mowers - well they are cheap and tough like old rotary hoes. A old rotary hoe with a 240v motor mounted would be quiet , tough and powerful and should be cheapish.
Liftit360 from Canada seems to be a good option, price better than the WA auswheel
Taking big brother at his word...I bolted a tow ball on the back of my newly revived cox.
While i have not tried to tow a boat arround yet,...it tows my empty box trailer with rediculous ease.
We had a wallaby keel over in the front yard the other week and we only found it because of the smell and the buzz of the flies...so I shoveled a small pile of dirt into the trailer a dragged it up the driveway to cover it, using the cox......now not like it was a tonne or anything but it dragged the trailer up the reasonably steep bit of our dirt front drive with just a bit of extra throttle and no sign of any traction problems.
I recon these things should pull quite a bit, arround 10-12 HP and a rediculous amount of final drive reduction.
When I stick somthing bigger on the back I'll report back.
One small problem is the coxes desire to go in a straight line at times because of the rigid rear axle..... pro's and con's there.......good traction but prone to understeer.

Oi Charlie!!!!
I finally had a couple of hours spare and got the 2hp (I think it was) electric motor mounted into the Masport this afternooooooon but the motor rotation was all wrong so I'll change that in the morning and see what happens.
It moves with the motor direction going the wrong way BUT the self tensioning of the belts is all wrong and forwards is backwards and backwards is forwards with the pedal.
So tomorrow is D-Day. Or should that be S-Day (because if it doesn't work it's back to the scrappy Joe's)
Lucky I have a spare big boat in the shed that's up a little hill that I can test it on.
Bye then
Scott
I intend on living for-ever....so far so good
Oi Charlie...I got it doing burnouts on the concrete today
Well not really burnouts but if I dropped the front wheels over the edge of the concrete and tried to pull them back up over the edge the rear tyres left dirty black marks on my nice new concrete. It was the traction that was the problem (even with my fat @rse holding the back down) not the lack of power
I reckon a tow-bar needs to be made now
I intend on living for-ever....so far so good
Got it all going Charlie. With towbar and all.
One slight problem though.
Even with my tiny tinny going up a modest slope it tends to do wheel-stands even with the tow-bar as short as possible.
It does work better in reverse then forwards.
I should measure the slope I suppose as it may be surprising just how much there is.

Finga,
Got any photos ? sounds very interesting
Frank
Finga mate have you tried reducing the tyre preasure a little and putting some weight on the front.
cheers

What would letting down the tyres achieve?
I intend on living for-ever....so far so good
Only if your hauling thru deep sand I would have thought BOPE.
What could go wrong.......................
