    Weipa in June

    Morning Guys,

Although I understand the road to Weipa is pretty good as far as they go; I was wondering how the road condition is currently if anyone has been there recently?

Looking at going in mid June and towing the 4.2m tinny there on the back of my new Ranger XLT. I have no problems towing the tinny but if the roads are up to shit then it will be a landbased trip as I don't want to kill my trailer :undecided:

Weipa has several good landbased spots according to my NQ Fishfinder book but I would much rather take the Tinny if possible. I Planned to call the Weipa police to get a local take on the roads just before going but if you guys can offer any advice then I'm all ears
    Regards,

    Andrew.

Also looking for comments of the accommodation at Weipa Anchorage as well if anyone has stayed there.

Looks like good budget accommodation but looks can be deceiving...

    Re: Weipa in June

    Hi,

sounds like the trip I have planned.

Firstly, I would contact a local fishing guide and book in a days fishing with them, before I started to putt around myself.

I have ideas about towing a small boat, and that would be to remove the motor from the transom. It may be overkill, but I feel it better to be safe after traveling all that way. Tie the boat to the trailer securely, spare bearing and hubs. Maybe even leftsprings. Certainly some weight must remain in the boat to make it bounce.... softly.

Try googling.. fishing weipa, sportfishing weipa, accom weipa etc etc.

I think Daintreeboy goes there a lot, well to marpoon anyway.

There isn't a lot of land based options around Weipa itself and is boat country for sure. There is lots of land based options at Pennefather Rvr inside the mouth and the beach south of the mouth and the fishing is good. Also Cullen Point and the beach south of.
I'd take the tinny if the trailer is up to scratch though, as the ocean is like a lake with offshore winds each day in June on the western cape and there are so many good options that become available. The PDR will find out any faults with the trailer, but if there are none then it's a breeze. You'll strike patches of corregations and you need to take care in the many 'dips' in the road, but on the whole the road is good - only 300ks of dirt left I believe.

If you are coming in June, the Weipa Fishing Classic is on over the Queens birthday long weekend, so it may make it difficult to book accomdation, if you wait until you get here.

    Thanks Slider,

Took the tinny to Karumba with no problems last year, and from what you're saying the road to Weipa is just as good if not a bit better.

Trailer doesn't see that much dirt and it always gets a good hose down after a trip so it should only need the base checks and be good to go.

    Thanks Marcus,

Looking at going there just after the classic to be honest; had to put the trip back about 1 to 2 weeks - bloody cheek!!

Hopefully they'll leave me some fish to catch

    Re: Weipa in June

    Hi Synful,

Just arrived in Weipa yesteday and came through yesterday from Cairns comfortably in 12 hours towing a 4.3m tinny. Road is pretty good actually and they are grading it now so it will get better by the time you come through. My trailer is pretty tough but did end up with a broken guard (more likely it was finishing off a weak weld from previous trips) so you may want to think about that. As said previously by others just watch the washouts and make sure you have some wieght in the boat and you shouldnt have any dramas.

    Cheers Mick

    Great stuff Mick,

Thanks for that and let us know how you go - looking forward to my trip in just over a months time.

Where are you staying while there?

Agree with Lucky Phil....spend a day with Dave Donald there and you will be wired into all the fishing spots. He's been a fishing guide there for a long time and from what I heard runs three boats now. Don't know his contact details but a google should find him.
