Hi Everyone
I am heading up lakefield national park and surrounding aread in about a months time chasing a few fish. We intend on fishing the rocky headlands as well as the freshwater lagoons for some Barra. I generally will be fishing from the bank, so extremely deep divers are out of the question. I have generally had all my luck using shallow divers.
I'm interested in what lures (whether they be hardbody or soft plastic) you would recommend as the best ones to buy. I have a couple of personal favourites such as leeds lures and the tropical rogue's but I have read a bit about x-raps etc but have never personally tried them.
So if you don't mind giving up a few personal favourites it would be much appreciated. Please advise colour also.
Cheers

g'day mate, whenever i'm in the cape, be it on the East or West coast, I make sure I pack a few old Nilsmaster Invincibles in the silver underneath, blue or green on top, as well as Killalure's, Flatz Ratz or River Ratz, usually in the tiger brown or striped blue colours, these lures have caught me literally hundreds of barra in the cape and every bloke that fished up their years ago had a few in their tackle box, the Barra Classics in brown tiger pattern seem to be doing pretty good as well, but don't forget this time of year, live bait will be the best option hands down, hope you have a great trip
cheers Mouse/Dennis

I have been using RMG and some locally made which are sold at a local tackle shop. The RMGs have been pretty good. I also use B52 (silver) and Bombers on occasions. The Flatz Ratz and River ratz are also worth a try. Basically Barra will hit nearly everything you throw at them some of the time, Live bait they will hit nearly all the time. If you are hitting snaggy country (and you should if you want barra) try Stump Jumpers.
Just don't be live bait yourself when it comes to the crocs.
I have just kitted up to go to Weipa next week and have a good supply of lures of all kinds and squidges
Have fun:smiley:

I am not addicted to buying fishing gear - I just need more than I can afford
The following would be handy:
1) Tilsan Big Barra in the Green Mackerel pattern
2) Rob Gadon Classic Barra in the reflective gold/black either 12cm and/or 16cm
3) Reidy's 'The Judge' (blue/green)
4) Size 1 and/or Size 2 JJ Stumpjumper in the light green & black pattern
5) Gold Bomber
"...a voice in my head keeps telling me to go fishing..."
Riedy's B52's blue top silver belly, or gold....... Gold Bombers........ Halco (i think) F18's in gold with black stripes............ mate if the Barra are on the chew a plastic clothes peg with a treble wired to it will do!!!............. hehe have fun!
Bundy Rum.......... Not just great for breakfast.
Throw in a couple of poppers too, been getting some awesome barra on them this year, make sure you upgrade the hardware though, rapala skitter pops have proven the best of the bunch, and new rapala one we've been trying is the skitter pRop, with some pretty good success.
Colour doesn't seem to be too much of an issue but have noticed slightly better catch and strike rates in the Green and Blue Mackerel colours.
Give a couple of tango dangers a chance too, great lures in low light.
Love my surface barra fishing, possibly the single most exciting fishing i've done yet, slow retrieve, and small quiet bloops, too much noise and you'll put them off.
We found in areas heavily fished that poppers bring out something different, something the fish has rarely seen and they are more likely to throw caution to the wind and belt it.
Biggest we have caught was a 94cm model caught by a mate's 6 year old boy in a heavily fished area very close to the city (5min out of townsville 'city')
Other than surface lures, flat rats, bombers, classics, x-raps, scorpions all have a place in my box, in a vast range of colours, as you never know, one day they might like natural browns and grey's the next hot pink and green might be the go.
I am flying to Weipa this Tuesday! for a week with all of the above! Woo Hoo!
Most of my Money is spent on Booze and Fishin. The Rest is just Wasted!
To The Shed.............
You only need three lures to catch Barra in either fresh or salt water environments on the Cape
1) Yellow Richos Little Terror
2) River 2 Sea Fizzer in clear with black back
3) Lead's Hi-jacker in Bronze scale.
If you cannot catch a Barra on one of these then they are not hitting any lures!
Cheers,
Nick Stock
P.S
A good mate who has had numerous sessions of 100+ Barra in a day around Weipa only uses three lures
1) Yellow Richos Little Terror
2) Pink Richos Little Terror
3) Yellow Richos Little Terror
Thanks Nick.
I can't find them stocked in Cairns. Only out of Barra and Jacks from Rocky.
I'm off on Thursday so I'll have to go without. Hopefully the one's I got will get a few.
Thanks anyway, will have to keep them in mind for my next trip in a few months time.

I have mate who spent a decade as fishing guide at El Questro in the Kimberley. He swears by Rob Gadon's Classic Barra's. Reckons it outfished every other lure they had, and they had plenty. He probably caught or witnessed being caught a 1000 barra every year. The only other lure he talks highly about is the Rapala Husky Jesk in red and white.
For the lagoon barra reidy's b52 and little lucifer are great lures. Definantly take some cultiva tango dancers as they are brilliant on freshwater barra.
