Clarke Abalone 4.9

I have recently purchased a very sound model of the Clarke Abalone 4.9m fitted with a 70 hp Evinrude and center console controls.
I have scraped the internal paint back where it is flaked and intend to prepare and paint the inside of the hull. It has been a cream color with what appears to be a rusty red undercoat. Most of the flaking has been just above the floor boards and that has come back to the alumnium. What is anyones experience in painting over the original and with what primer for the bare aluminium?:undecided:

Can't speak for painting over the old paint, but I have used "etch primer" in the past when painting raw aluminium with good results. I think like with all painting, the preparation is the key inlcuding sanding and cleaning prior to application.

Use lots of grease and tar remover (Prepsol) before you intend on painting with anything. Boats especially often have a can of wd40 or some similar product sprayed on wiring, corrosion, fishing gear, pliers and anything else that's suffered from a watery environment. Not all of these sprays are easy to remove especially the silicone based ones.
As for the existing paint and how the new paint will stick to it.......that's a risk we all take when not rubbing back to bare all over. 90% of the time its not an issue......10% of the time it is......whats your track record like?

you can use a product called Alodine 1200S, you first have to clean the boat with ally prep and then apply the alodine which will turn the ally a tan color which is then good to be painted this stuff in pretty expensive but works fine, here is a web site with more info www.avantichem.com.au hope this helps

Thanks Jack, Have plenty of time so I intend to be thourough, will use prepsol and plenty of elbow grease with the wet and dry. I guess a one coat urethane is the way to go for the inside of hull and console. Chris.
