Hello Everyone, new member just signed up here!

Mate of mine, and also housemate and myself have been really getting back into the fishing side of life again since Xmas, and been heading down around the batemans bay region (we're in canberra) and been doing some land based stuff.

Couple of months ago, we chipped in and purchased a 13ft tinny, and ended up with a 30hp outboard to allow us a few further options when it comes to locations to fish.

Pretty much so far we've been fishing Tuross Lakes, getting some decent flathead and bream, and the clyde river, once again with a few flatties, the odd salmon, and pt jackson sharks and big rays!

Found what we thought to be a good location the other day at Kiola too, ... but all we got was a Yellow tail Pike and a Salmon.

What places are good around this region? ... bearing in mind due to our boat we cant really go too far out, and very weather dependant, ... but ideally looking for good flathead to take home and eat ... or some good fighting stuff like salmon, tailor and the Bonito I keep hearing are about?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Damo, if your coming to the coast from Canberra, then fishing Tuross (which is a bluddy top spot..there are some horse flathead in the lake), you have some of the best options for shallow lake eastuary fishing in the country for what you are targetting. From Ulladulla and Conjola to the north of where you hit the coast road, down through Burrill Lake, Lake Tabourie, Bawley Point (brilliant rock and beach fishing), Durras, Batemans Bay, Broulee and Moruya, Tuross (which you already know) then on to the daddy of them all Narooma - Wagonga inlet.

Offshore in a 13' tinny down there is NOT a good idea, the Batemans Bay area would be the safest bet, but the offhsore fish you are wanting to chase often come into the inlet at Narooma, and there are some major ooglies just upstream from the fishing club in the deep holes.....it is also the home of some GINORMOUS dusky flathead.

For a bit of help ......look up the Canberra Fishermans Club www.canberrafishos.com , most of their members fish in the area you are talking about, not a bad bunch either last time I went to one of their events.

hey damo, my choice would be lake burrill, there is some great flatties and even some snapper if you know where to look, the islands around Kioloa should be ok for you on calm days some good fishing around Brush Is and belowla Is and some very good flathead drifts around there too just make sure you have the right safety gear and log on to Kioloa coastal patrol or just pop up and see them before you go good bunch of blokes up there, just watch out there is a few bommies that break between the 2 islands that can break even when the seas arnt very big. cheers BK

Guys, thanks for the replies so far.

We tried Ulladulla the other day (before we hit Kiola) and really got nothing except some small bream and some strange kinds of reef fish, .. so we headed south to Kiola.

Burrill Lake with Snapper and Flatties sound good, .. might have to give it a go sometime.

We do understand that our little tinny is not the most suited to open water, hence mostly we've started in the Clyde Basin there, I'm not that experienced with boating, but my housemate has 15ish years of offshore boating and sailing experience, his brother is on here a fair bit from what I believe, he lives up at Brissie. .... so we dont do anything stupid, and listen to his advice like gospel pretty much.

Wogonga Inlet at Narooma? ... I've heard its not too bad there, but last trip we went north from Batemans, not south .... maybe south it is next time.

If you get a bit further north you could try Culbuarra at the mouth of the Crookhaven River....plenty of mixed species there from the mouth back to Greenwell Point.

Mike, the small breakwall at the boat ramp at Crookhaven was a spot we found when venturing land based, .... havent been back with the tinny yet, but it is on the cards.

On the northern side of the river you would have seen the long rock wall goes from the mouth back into the river westerly. The last 150 - 200 metres of the western end of this wall is very good for bream flarthead and luderick. Just off the end of that wall just outside of the mouth used to be good for livies. If i get time tomorrow i will google earth the area and mark some spots for you in the river.

When I was based down south, use to fish Narooma, Tuross, Durras and the Cylde in my 13 foot tinnie. If you have a sounder, sound around the main basin in Narooma to find the bait schools early morning, then when you do, drop over a couple of 10-15 foot diving lures for Tailor. When you hook up, cut the engine and caste and retrieve. A heap of fun. Don't give up if you miss first time, they are there, and some real horses too.

Will definately be looking at the wall at Crookhaven, and also down at Narooma too I think. ... we have a sounder, so looking for the holes and stuff should be a bit easier. ... Its a humminbird 160 or something .. nothing too flash. .... I'm assuming these are best for tracking the bottom? not really finding the actual fish?

Also coming into the winter months, means my weekend work is a lot less, so be looking at heading down the coast more often. Now not fishing for years (and in this area) what species are good value during the winter? or pretty much the normal stuff hook up all year round?

Bream, luderick, tailor, salmon, jewies (muilloway), still some nice flathead around..though you have to work hard for em, silver trevally (get some horses in the basin at Narooma).
