Modifying live fibre o/h grips and seat.

    Hello collective,

I had a live fibre 24 kg o/h rod modifyed a few years back, ( by a tackle store), and i want to do the same to a second live fibre rod i have, but do it myself.

I have enclosed piccies of the longer butt (thats what i like)compared to the shorter, and am wondering how i would go about it. ( i remember last time it was very costly to do)

So in the interest of saving a few bucks, and learning something along the way, i leave it to your capable hands.

    Thanks for your time, Insideout.

It was costly cause they would have had to strip the rod down & then rebuild it.

You'll need to remove all the guides ( reuse them later), then cut the grips off, then off with the reel seat. Most likely you'll have to use a hack saw or small dremel. Cut it in a spiral pattern to get it off. YOu will be left with a virgin blank that you can now build up to your own specifications.
There will be a thread in here somewhere about building rods from scratch.

I did this to a few RLF20's as practice before I started building up my own rods.

Do you want to simply extend the blank (and thereby lengthen the rod), or do you want to move the reel seat forward and keep the length the same?
The former is feasible, the latter probably not worth the trouble.
A new blank will cost you around $160.
Add say another $100 in bits. (most of which you will have to replace anyway once you start cutting)
Sell your old rod and use the funds to build what you want.

If you want to just lengthen the butt, then cut the old grip off. Get a section of old blank and poke it up the rear to the reel seat and glue it in.
Make a tapered plug to act as a ramp to install your near grip and slide it one from the back.
Re-install your gimbal and you're done.
    Cheers,
    Owen
